Uppingham School are seeking to appoint an outstanding and inspirational musician to lead and manage a thriving String Faculty. The appointee will play a key role in a large, well-resourced Music Department that has a reputation for excellence. A track record of first-rate teaching - on any string instrument - and a demonstrable rapport with school-age musicians is vital.

Facilities are first-class, three Music Department buildings include a radio station, 65 practice rooms, 3 organs, recording studios and state-of-the-art percussion rooms. Concerts take place in a variety of School performing spaces and further afield in venues such as Saffron Hall, King’s Place, Ely Cathedral and King’s College, Cambridge. The Lunchtime Concerts Series regularly attracts 100+ members of the school and local community.

Masterclasses have been led recently by Jack Liebeck, Hannah Roberts, Stephen Hough and Angela Hewitt.

The ability to inspire others, communicate well, and to lead and work as part of a team is essential. An appreciation of the wider life of a seven day-week boarding school is a prerequisite, along with a willingness to take part in the boarding and extra-curricular programme.

The appointee will be a dynamic and inspirational character with broad

professional experience, first-class subject knowledge and an outstanding record in coaching and leading ensembles.

Uppingham School is a mixed, Church of England independent secondary school with sixth form and boarding, located in Leicestershire. The secondary school, situated in Uppingham has approximately 791 students on record.

Uppingham School was founded in 1584, originally as a school for boys. In 1975 girls were admitted, and it became fully co-educational as of 2001. The majority of students attending the secondary school are boarders.

Work is generally presented neatly and pupils’ note-taking is effective. They develop good numeracy skills and their capacity to think critically is notable. Creative abilities are well developed and their exploration of ideas is particularly marked in their enrichment activities. Pupils’ study habits are good. In the lessons observed, pupils worked very well with each other, and also worked well independently. They enjoy their work and this stems in part from the good-natured atmosphere in lessons. Pupils use information and communications technology (ICT) proficiently.”
