Line Manager: Pastoral Deputy Principal


Level of Responsibility: Head of Department


Principal Purpose of Position: To manage applications to all universities, to ensure provision of college, careers and summer school advice and support.


Specific Responsibilities:

• Managerial position: HUCO is the direct line manager for the University and Careers Office (UCO) and all its staff members.  HUCO is a member of the Pastoral Committee.

• Advisory role: In line with college policies, the Head of Unviersity and Careers Office (UCO) should be in charge of all aspects of dissemination of advice to parents and students concerning with universities and courses to choose.

• University application coordinator: HUCO manages the process through which applications are made, oversees all student applications and is responsible for oversight of the work of counsellors and other UCO staff.  In the event of non-submission of an application by a student, HUCO is responsible for ensuring all students and procedures have been followed, stakeholders have been informed at regular intervals and no fault can be found with the college.  HUCO is responsible for equitable distribution of work within the UCO.

• Security: HUCO is responsible for ensuring that the highest standards of professional conduct are maintained when dealing with confidential references, predicted grades and an other correspondence between the college and unviersities.  HUCO ensures all UCO staff maintain data protection and privacy in line with college policies.

• Networking: HUCO is responsible for creating and maintaining links with university admissions office and for advocating on behalf of students as necessary.  This will include attendance at international admissions forums and visits from admissions officers.

• Oxbridge & top US applications: With the support of the UK and US Universities Coordinators, HUCO will take a special interest in the Oxbridge and top US applications. This will involve closer scrutiny of preparation procedures such as college allocation, assistance with application processes, and follow up with universities. 

• Careers counselling: HUCO will coordinate and manage the college careers counselling programme.  Ensuring counsellors are mentoring students and completing activities as directed by PDP.

• Four-year UCO programme: HUCO will devise a UCO programme through school to ensure all students receive UCO input to prepare for the most competitive universities overseas.

• Summer school: HUCO is responsible for ensuring that systems are in place whicih enable students to meet the requirements for summer school applications.

• Data analysis: With the support of the coordinators, conduct data analysis of applications and outcomes to further improve the quality of SCIE applications and for documentation.

• Staff training: HUCO is to organise relevant trainings for staff to ensure the quality of SCIE applications.

• Any other allocated tasks consistent with the principal purpose of the position.


These responsibilities will be carried out in accordance with the Guiding Statements of the College and with due consideration of Child Safeguarding.

Founded in 2003, SCIE is the city’s first full-time high school (Year 10 to Year 13) teaching an international curriculum. SCIE is a highly selective day and boarding school teaching an international curriculum to Chinese students preparing them for overseas universities. Using English as the medium of instruction and communication, SCIE offers IGCSE and GCE AS and A-levels, mainly through Cambridge International. SCIE is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the WASC. We are also a member school of the regional organisations EARCOS and FOBISIA.

The class of 2021 received 31 Oxbridge offers in a diverse range of subjects including Architecture and Experimental Psychology in addition to the traditional strong presence in Engineering, Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Many students also go on to other universities in the Russel Group, US Ivy League and other top institutions around the world, including schools for Art and Design, Music, and Hospitality Management.


SCIE has very diversified staff who come from more than 20 countries, not only UK, New Zealand, the United States and Australia, but also Canada, Colombia, India, Ireland, South Africa and Spain. Currently, the College has over 160 full-time teachers and 70 administrative staff members. 


In August 2020, the College moved to its new purpose-built campus in Antuoshan, Shenzhen. The new site is fully equipped for the College expansion with smart classrooms, a large number of science laboratories, a 750-seat theatre, sports facilities and all that we need to facilitate the high quality teaching and learning of the College community. The top floor, with a comfortable staff lounge, gym and designated areas for meetings and CPD, is accessible to staff only. Accommodation is provided in our adjacent staff apartment building of a minimum two-bedroom furnished standard.   


Antuoshan is in Futian, the CBD district of Shenzhen. The campus is within walking distance to international shops, supermarkets and restaurants. It is a stones’ throw away from the Antuo Hill subway station, giving easy and convenient access to the city’s extensive metro network.
