Job overview

Thank you for your interest in the Head of Year 12 position at Salesian. I would like to take this opportunity to share a few thoughts with you on the role and what it involves.

Salesian is a Catholic school and Sixth Form College that strives for three aims:

•To support the students in gaining the best exam results they are capable of

•To provide them with the skills they will need to live in tomorrow’s world

•To promote Gospel values and support the students in their faith journey

Our Sixth Form College operates from its own site and has approximately 400 students.

Our curriculum consists of mainly A’ level courses (although we have recently been designated as one of the first colleges in the country to offer T’ levels) and the vast majority of students go on to university. Most staff teach at both the school and the college but as the college continues to grow we have increasing numbers of specialist A’ level teachers. The majority of students have come through Salesian School but they are joined by a significant proportion of external students, who are attracted by the high standards of academic teaching and excellent pastoral and UCAS support.

The successful candidate will join the College Leadership Team. As part of the CLT, the Head of Year 12 will be responsible for:

•Securing the well-being of every student in the year group

•Ensuring that individual students meet academic targets

•Ensuring that all students are positively engaged in all aspects of college life

•Supporting students in their transition to university, apprenticeship or work

•Enriching the Catholic ethos of the college and supporting the students in their spiritual development

•Contributing to the drive to raise standards of teaching and achievement across the college as a whole

•Promoting the college’s reputation for being “first choice” for those seeking outstanding post-16 education

The college is projected to grow to in excess of 600 students by 2023 and the successful candidate will be expected to work closely with a significant number of parents, teachers and other members of staff. This will therefore be a high profile role with significant leadership responsibility that would suit someone aspiring to Assistant Headship within the next two to four years.

Whilst the successful applicant need not necessarily be Catholic, they would have to be comfortable with leading worship and promoting the Salesian ethos. It goes without saying that only teachers with a proven track record in the classroom will be considered and the appointed person would be expected to teach mainly A’ level classes.

“Achievement is outstanding. Teaching is outstanding. Relationships are exemplary and expectations are high. Students have excellent attitudes to learning and their behaviour is exemplary” - Ofsted 2013

Salesian School is characterised by the philosophy of the Salesian founder St John Bosco (1815-1888). He stressed high educational standards and sound moral and religious education. He insisted too on a friendly atmosphere in his schools where the idea of community could be fostered. We strive to ensure that every student experiences personally, a happy atmosphere that will help them to leave the school with a high level of confidence in their own abilities as well as excellent examination results. These goals are delivered through a strong pastoral system, excellent learning and teaching and an extensive range of sporting, cultural, physical and social extra-curricular activities.

It is at the foundation of our values to:

  • Develop the whole person - mind, body and spirit
  • Ensure relationships are key
  • Ensure that all decisions are made in the best interests of the children
  • Ensure that everything we do is based on Gospel values

We promise parents and students that we will:

  • Ensure that students get the best results they are capable of achieving
  • Develop the skills and attributes that students will need to be successful in the world of the future
  • Develop the morals and values of our students to help them lead decent Christian lives and go on to promote these values throughout the world

We who work in Salesian Schools state our belief in our young people. We recognise that they come from differing backgrounds but that they are of equal value to God and to us. In the spirit of St John Bosco, we turn our efforts to those who stand in special need because of lack of material or emotional security.

We set out to create in our schools a joyful atmosphere in which the dignity and worth of each pupil and member of staff is recognised, developed and safeguarded. Our schools are noted for an atmosphere of welcome where all feel at home and a sense of safety and security. Staff are willing to be present with the pupils in friendship and to go that one step further, where this is necessary, to meet the needs of young people.

We strive to affirm, develop and challenge the abilities of each. We are concerned with the way in which each person matures within the context of the community. While recognising that national standards have a part to play, in seeking to achieve these, we emphasise the unique path each person will take. Our main criterion is personal worth. We prepare young people to be a positive influence in the places where they live and work with others.

Within our Salesian Schools we foster the spiritual, moral and religious development of our pupils and a lively celebration of prayer. In this, we respect where each one stands and his or her basic freedom to choose. However, we strive to present these important features of school life in a way that speaks to the needs and concerns of our young people.

We recognise that in our present age there are many social and educational tensions that stretch our staff, at times, to breaking point. In our schools, therefore, we undertake to affirm our commitment to and support for each other.

We also recognise that we are part of a network of schools within the Diocese and Local Area. We appreciate and respect the work of colleagues in these schools.
