Job overview

This is a wonderful opportunity to lead Year Five in a thriving independent school with strong traditions for excellent pastoral care. The post holder will have the responsibility for overseeing and reviewing the smooth and efficient day-to-day running of a Year Group at the Junior School which consists of four classes.

In a new model for the school, Years Five and Six staff will work on a two-year cycle. The successful candidate will start as Head of Year Five, and in September 2024, become Head of Year Six. Their team of Group Tutors will become Year Six Group Tutors allowing for a smooth transition in terms of Pastoral Care.

The Head of Year will have overall responsibility for the pastoral welfare of the pupils and act as the first point of contact for staff with regard to parental concerns and pastoral welfare. This will include arranging meetings with parents to discuss issues of concern and offer support to individual teachers in their meetings with parents.

The role will require establishing a close work relationship with the Deputy Head (Pastoral) to ensure the efficient organisation of all pastoral matters. This includes attending and contributing to meetings with fellow Heads of Year, chairing weekly meetings with fellow Group Tutors and preparing weekly Year Group assemblies to all pupils that includes celebrating their talents and offering necessary pastoral guidance.

As Head of Year, it is integral to inspire all in our Josephite, Georgian family to be the very best version of themselves. You will be required to play an active role in the spiritual life of the School supporting the values of “douceur” and “politesse” and encouraging all pupils to exhibit the pupil mission statement of “Learning to Live and Love like Jesus.”

The successful candidate will enjoy working as part of a team and leading others, have a good sense of humour, and will maintain excellent working relationships with colleagues. Our aim is to develop independent, lifelong learners who are well prepared for their next stage of learning and we are seeking someone who shares our aims by providing the highest quality pastoral care for all pupils.

A full job description and a person specification, along with details about working at St George's can be found in the Candidate Information Pack.

The closing date for applications is 8.00 am on Tuesday 6 June with interviews scheduled for Thursday 8 or Friday 9 June.

About St George's Junior School

We are an independent Roman Catholic co-educational day school for pupils aged 3 to 11 years. We seek to inspire a love of learning and to encourage all to fulfil their aspirations and potential within an atmosphere of mutual respect and compassion. We strive to promote our Josephite tradition which encourages a strong sense of all belonging to one family which encompasses the wider world.

Our recent ISI Inspection report found that results in national test at age eleven have been excellent in relation to the average for maintained primary schools. Pupils’ attitudes to their work are excellent. They are interested in their studies and obviously enjoy the many and varied opportunities which the staff provide for them, both within and outside the classroom. The majority of pupils transfer to the senior school at age 11, with several each year being offered scholarships. Good, and often outstanding, teaching contributes to the high standards which the pupils achieve.

The pupils’ personal qualities are excellent and the emphasis on promoting the values of the Josephite tradition results in pupils who are well mannered, polite and welcoming. A sense of community pervades the whole school and pupils are proud to be part of it. They show high levels of confidence when conversing with adults and are able to express their opinions in discussions with increasing maturity as they move up the school. Staff, both teaching and non-teaching, provide an excellent level of pastoral care and their example leads to the happy and purposeful atmosphere found in all parts of the school.

The school benefits from the excellent examples set by the senior leadership team and their dedication to ensuring that the ethos of the school is upheld. Governors are fully committed to the school and by regular and informed discussion play an important role in its development. They visit regularly and those governors who are priests visit to celebrate the weekly mass. Governors take their legal responsibilities very seriously and ensure that all statutory policies and procedures are in place, meeting all regulatory requirements. Parents and pupils show overwhelming support for the school, its leaders and its staff.
