Job overview

King’s College, Taunton is one of the South-West’s leading co-educational boarding and day schools. After a long and successful tenure our current Headmaster, Richard Biggs, will be retiring from the role at the end of the next academic year (August 2022). King’s is a thriving senior school, which enjoys a strong reputation within the South-West, the UK and internationally. Academic results and co-curricular achievements have been excellent, and there is a waiting list in every year group for places in September 2021.

The School Council now seeks to appoint an outstanding candidate to provide strong academic, pastoral, management and strategic leadership, ensuring a happy and dynamic school which continues to strive for excellence. This post, which starts in September 2022, offers an exciting opportunity to an exceptional leader to take the College forward, building on the success of recent years.

The new Head will need to show drive, charisma and vision; generating enthusiasm and energy into the life of the school. He or she will be passionate about the value of co-education and of boarding, and will be committed to ensuring that all pupils are encouraged to succeed and to develop the skills and the confidence they will need to make their mark in the world.

The successful candidate will have a significant track record of senior school leadership. He or she will be a creative strategic thinker, with a strong personal ethos of service, a collaborative approach and a commitment to enabling others. An accomplished communicator, the appointee will possess highly developed interpersonal skills and robust intellectual abilities. A genuine resonance with a traditionally-based, but forward-thinking and dynamic approach to independent education is essential.

King’s College is a thriving boarding and day school of approximately 450 pupils. It combines strong academic achievement, traditional values and excellent pastoral care with a progressive, modern outlook, providing girls and boys aged 13–18 with the opportunities, confidence and ability to reach their full potential within a happy and caring environment.

King’s College Prep l (located some three miles away) combines with King’s College to provide a continuous education from 2-18. The two schools are run by one governing body, with many functions (marketing, strategy and finance for example) undertaken jointly.

King’s College has a rich and welcoming family and community ethos. Just over 60% of the pupils board. For a relatively small school, it has an enviable record of success in all areas.

The school has regularly topped GCSE and A level league tables for Somerset. A broad range of co-curricular activities is offered, and the school is renowned for its success in sport, music, performing arts, fine art, design technology and outdoor pursuits. In many of these activities our pupils have achieved success at national and even international levels.

Good discipline is encouraged in a firm and positive way within a supportive pastoral framework. King’s College is strong on manners and social skills. Pupils go on to thrive at good universities and in their professional careers.

In short, King’s is a purposeful, outward-looking, down-to-earth, highly successful school.
