The Governing Body of Wells Cathedral School is seeking an ambitious educational leader and inspirational ambassador to succeed Elizabeth Cairncross as Head from September 2018.

Founded in AD909 to educate the choristers of the cathedral, Wells Cathedral School has a rich educational history with music at its heart. Today, Wells is proud to offer a world class musical provision as a cathedral choir school and specialist music school within a broader educational context. In a warm and accepting community which lives by the school motto, esto quod es (be what you are), pupils are encouraged to make full use of the tailored academic, pastoral and co-curricular offering and enabled to grow into confident young adults prepared to face an ever changing world.

Wells Cathedral School is a preeminent co-educational boarding and day school, educating more than 770 pupils aged 3 – 18 years. The Governing Body is looking for a candidate with proven/sound business acumen and an understanding of the Christian ethos of the school. The person appointed should be able to build on strong foundations to ensure continuous improvement and lead the school sustainably through the next exciting stages of its ongoing development.

About Wells Cathedral School

Wells Cathedral School is a co-educational, Church of England, independent school offering day places to children aged 2-18 and boarding places to children aged 8-18. Based in Wells, Somerset, it currently has around 730 pupils. It is set up as a charitable trust and offers bursaries and scholarships., Wells Cathedral School is one of the oldest in Europe, with early records going back to 909 AD. In 1969 it became one of the first independent schools to accept girls. It provides an all-round education for its pupils and also, notably, incorporates a music specialist programme within the main school, making it one of five specialist music schools in the UK and the only one to offer such specialism within the context of an all-round education.
