Job overview

Ipswich School, of which the Preparatory School is a part, is one of the foremost independent schools in East Anglia. We have a long history, established over 600 years ago, and we are the only school mentioned in the works of William Shakespeare. Today, Ipswich School is a co-educational school with over 1,000 pupils aged between 3 months and 19 years. We have been voted Suffolk’s top independent school in the Sunday Times Parent Power Guide each year since 2016.

We are very proud of our academic success, which is one of the key features of Ipswich School, coupled with a rich and successful co-curricular life. Our pupils realise their potential through a rounded education that is second to none, and we firmly believe that we create extraordinary futures for all our pupils in a happy, caring, and safe environment, taught by excellent teachers.

This is an exceptional opportunity for an inspiring and highly skilled educationalist to lead our Prep School and oversee The Lodge Day Nursery. The successful candidate will have the strategic vision, drive and experience to build on existing success and develop the Prep School further while also preserving and staying true to its history and tradition.

You should be fully committed to Ipswich School’s core values and bring experience of successful senior leadership in prep school education. You will be keen to promote academic rigour within a safe and transparent culture supported by excellent pastoral care and to ensure that children have access to a wide range of co-curricular opportunities. An engaging, visible, and instinctively collaborative leader, you will be able to inspire confidence across all sections of the school and local community, enjoy networking and be able to promote the Prep School extensively.

About Ipswich Preparatory School

At Ipswich Preparatory School we provide children with a supportive environment that encourages girls and boys to love learning, grow in self-confidence and acquire a wide range of worthwhile interests.  The Prep School is in three sections: Early Years (4 to 5 year olds), Lower Prep (5 to 7 year olds) and Upper Prep (7 to 11 year olds).

Children at the Prep School are happy.  They are happy because they enjoy their lessons.  They have a full and exciting programme of activities.  And they are taught by people who are genuinely interested in them and know them really well

Pastoral care is outstanding. It’s centred on the form teacher who spends a great deal of time with their pupils. We can call on a host of other experts and resources if needed.

For those looking to work at our Prep School, you will find wonderful purpose-built classrooms in a state-of-the-art Prep School building, small class sizes – typically around 15 in the Lower Prep and between 18 and 25 in the Upper Prep. You will also find parents are very supportive and keen to develop the potential in their children.

“You can see what young children need and then shape your teaching accordingly. We are not tied to the National Curriculum which rather forces teachers to teach specific things. We are so lucky to have this flexibility.” Prep School teacher.
