Job overview

Ref ABC02389

We are looking for a highly-motivated and inspirational individual with a proven track record in school leadership to lead our new flagship secondary school in the south of Aberdeen City. This impressive new school represents a major capital investment of £47 million and will replace the existing Kincorth and Torry Academies and serve the communities of Cove, Kincorth, Nigg and Torry which lie to the south of the River Dee. The new school is due to be completed by mid-June 2018 and will be fully open to pupils by August 2018.

The new academy will serve a population with a wide socioeconomic background: Torry is an area of regeneration and the two primary schools in the community receive Scottish Attainment Challenge funding. The southern part of the school zone is largely new build flats and houses in Cove and further developments are planned for the area surrounding Loirston Loch.

In line with Aberdeen City's review of inclusion, inclusive practice has been at the heart of the design brief of the new school and will be a key driver in ensuring equity and excellence for all. Being fully DDA compliant, the Academy will provide a first class education for all of the secondary aged pupils in the school's zone. The design of the Academy will provide break out spaces for one to one tuition and quiet space for pupils who require this level of support, in addition to traditional classrooms.

The Council has ambitious targets for all of the young people who will attend the new school. At present the positive destination statistics for Kincorth Academy and Torry Academy are 90.8% and 80.8% respectively, with 56.4% and 54.7% of pupils going onto further or higher education.

We want to recruit to this post as soon as possible so that the successful candidate can begin the process of creating the vision, values, aims and ethos of the new school and the communities it will serve. This will also allow the development and implementation of a curriculum rationale, design and structures to meet the needs of the all the young people.

The successful candidate will also lead and manage associated school staffing structures ensuring that these are progressed and recruited to prior to the opening of the new school. Equally important during this period of transition will be the development of effective working relationships with all staff in the existing academies, with all young people, their families, partners and agencies.

A key focus for the school will be on continuing to deliver and promote STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths). The new school will continue to build on the existing culture and practice of high quality creative and performing arts at both academies, facilitated by the provision of a dance studio, integrated music and dramatic performance spaces and an assembly hall.

There are excellent sports facilities for the provision of quality physical education experiences for young people and for wider sporting activities. These include: a dance studio, fitness suite, games hall, six lane 25 metre swimming pool and 3G AstroTurf pitches. Outwith the school day, the sports areas will be available for use by the community.

If you believe that you possess the necessary drive, determination, outstanding leadership skills to match our mission to raise aspirations, inspire ambition and improve outcomes for young people, we would be pleased to receive your application.
