Job overview

The Head Teacher (Designate) will be required to call on a wealth of experience gained in years of education during the pre-opening stage. Topics at this stage will include staff recruitment, education planning and the use of technology in the school. There will be an outward facing focus in the pre-opening stage to engage with the local community and promote the school to a wider audience.

The board of PolyMAT, a multi academy trust in South East London, is looking to appoint a Head Teacher Designate for Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls (WPSfG).  WPSfG will be an eight form entry girls’ school in the heart of Thamesmead and sister school to the Ofsted rated Outstanding boys’ school. This school is due to open its doors to 240 Year 7 girls in September 2019 and the state-of-the-art new building is on-schedule on a site immediately adjacent to the boys’ school.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the vision of the school, take an active part in developing the curriculum and be responsible for the recruitment of students and staff. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for an experienced and ambitious Senior Leader who is ready to take the next steps on their leadership journey.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and reflective, whilst able to demonstrate leadership skills, vision, strategic and interpersonal skills, underpinned by a track record of raising standards.

As Head Teacher Designate, you will be able to work closely with the experienced leadership team in the boys’ school and transfer some of the good practice and skills that you acquire to the girls’ school.  We hope to appoint for January 2019 to allow the successful candidate to play a key role in the pre-opening phase of the school.  You will also be allocated a mentor for at least the first year of your appointment and you will work closely in partnership with the Headteacher of the boys’ school so that both schools support each other.

As Head Teacher in September 2019 you will have the opportunity to become an inspirational and strategic leader, to empower girls and encourage them to study the traditionally male dominated STEM subjects. Ultimately, your aim is to develop capable, confident and independent learners who are well prepared to meet the opportunities and challenges presented by a global community, by delivering a seamless approach to teaching and learning that transfers to the workplace.

PolyMAT values all staff and is keen to invest in their training and development at all stages of their careers.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, including the need for the successful candidate to undertake a disclosure and barring check via the Disclosure and Barring Service.

The school is also committed to promoting equality, challenging discrimination and developing community cohesion. We welcome applications from all sections of the community.

If you believe that you possess the qualities needed to lead this school then please apply.

Woolwich Polytechnic is a proud member of the PiXL group (Partners in Excellence). PiXL was formed with the aim of supporting and developing the GCSE results of thousands of students in many schools across London.

We are an inclusive school who celebrates its culture and diversity. We believe in giving young people the support they require, whatever their abilities, background or circumstances. The school’s success is based on thriving partnerships between pupils, parents, staff and governors. No one group works in isolation.

Being an all-boys' school, with a mixed post-16 centre, we are proud of the fact that our outstanding pastoral system adds to our ethos and success. Our post-16 partnership allows us to welcome both young men and women from all schools and backgrounds to contribute to our further success and expansion of our post-16 centre. We understand the pressures facing the students and we have a dedicated team of career specialists and personal counsellors to help advise and guide students throughout their time at the school where required.

All staff at the Poly are supported by a staff development programme and by effective line leadership and performance management processes. We have many staff that have gained internal promotions and made rapid career progression. This reflects on our ability to develop staff and reward outstanding contributions.  Indeed, our focus on professional development and maximising success has led to the recent establishment of Co-Headship, something that has increased our leadership capacity even more.
