Job overview

Tes is supporting the appointment of a dedicated and experienced Head Teacher for a school based in Santiago, Chile. The individual is required to have extensive leadership and head teaching experience along with strong budget management and experience handling legal areas.

It is a small private school which follows the IB MYP/PYP curriculum which will be combined with local curriculum -  (the candidate does not have to have local curriculum experience). They are a co-educational school catering for over 800 students from age 4 - 18. 

The Role

  • Implement and coordinate school philosophy and major policies, support school projects and encourage religious activities in the school
  • Work together with the psychologists, guidance counsellor, form teachers and tutors to ensure that the school is actively working towards the formation of young people whose values and ideals closely reflect those of the school’s student profile
  • Take responsible for the discipline of pupils, implement support in situations of crisis and in the case of intractable group or individual problems take a more active role 
  • Work together with Senior Leadership and teachers to implement necessary changes in the curriculum, annual class timetable, lesson programmes and the development of the International Baccalaureate diploma programme , the Middle Years Programme and the Primary Years Programme. You will participate as fully as possible in the activities of the Chilean IB Association
  • Design and implement the selection processes for filling vacancies in the student body, decide on appropriate advertising, if necessary, and determine which staff will participate in the process.  The heads decision, as to which applicants are offered places, is final. In the case of suspensions, the head of school will always be consulted by the head of section before a decision is taken.  
  • In all cases the school’s rules and procedures must be applied to the letter in order to comply with local regulations and avoid legal action against the school. It is the heads responsibility to ensure the school are following all legislations. 
  • The head of school should develop, oversee and participate in the school’s staff appraisal and professional development plan, making any modifications of the plan that he/she esteems necessary.
  • The head of school is expected to encourage parents to support the school’s policies and to participate in activities which are open to them, such as community service, accompanying some trips, supporting sports teams during matches, working on committees and attending parents’ meetings organised by the school.  The head of school will attend many parents’ meetings and will, in particular, meet regularly with representatives of the Parents’ Association’s executive committee. 
  • The head of school will be one of the official representatives of the school to the Association of British Schools in Chile and Latin American Heads. You will be required to attend and participate in meetings and conferences.

Essential Criteria:

  • Leadership and Head teaching experience
  • English and Spanish Speaking
  • IB MYP/PYP Curriculum experience
  • Budget Management Experience
  • Legal Experience 
  • QTS/PGCE (or equivalent)

Desirable:

  • Local Curriculum experience (Chile)

Package:

  • A three-year initial term, renewable by mutual consent;
  • Gross salary equivalent to 56,000 pounds sterling tax free (including an end of year bonus equivalent to one month’s salary), paid in local currency. Deductions are made for local medical cover and pension; the deductions for pension scheme may go towards a foreign pension scheme if adequate documentation is presented.
  • Extra annual contribution towards private pension scheme, up to a maximum of 600 pounds sterling subject to presentation of legally required documentation;
  • Contribution of up to 350 pounds sterling annually for dentistry;
  • Free furnished accommodation and a generous contribution towards, electricity, water, gas and telephone bills;
  • Total fee remission for dependent children at Redland School. Should children be enrolled at another Chilean school, Redland will contribute an amount equivalent to 30% of its own fee;
  • Air fares for appointee and family (children until 18 years old) at the start and end of the contract. 
  • Minimum of six weeks’ leave in the year (in practice usually 8 or 9)
