Haileybury Astana opened in September 2011. The President formally opened the school which welcomed 103 pupils on opening day. The school opened from years 1 to 6 only but is now populated up to year 11 with the first cohort of IGCSE pupils taking exams in summer 2017. A sixth form is being established which will offer IB from Autumn 2017.

The school has around 500 pupils from kindergarten to year 11 and is expected to have over 800 pupils at maturity. Over the next 3 years the number will increase as the oldest cohort move up the school and additional pupils join at younger ages. Haileybury Astana will become an all through secondary school offering IGCSE, and IB in sixth form. The teaching medium is English with additional teaching of Kazakh language and history. The school also offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities and aspires to become the leading academic school in the region. It draws on the educational values and ethos of Haileybury UK who take an active role in the school operation and has strong bonds with its sister school, Haileybury Almaty.   

The Governors and Shareholders are seeking to appoint an ambitious individual with the ability to lead a happy, successful and disciplined school in a caring atmosphere, inspiring staff and pupils to achieve high academic standards and aspirations.

Candidates for the position of Head of Haileybury Astana will have the following capabilities in terms of experience and skills:

  • An exceptional, collaborative leader with proven ability to forge partnerships and build positive working relationships, negative with, and influence partners and other stakeholders.
  • Substantial teaching and Leadership insight gained in a British Independent School, and experience of working in a British international school is desirable.
  • The skills and experience to create an academically successful school, and proven ability to convert strategy into results.

Ideally required for April 2017 start, or possibly September 2017. The governors and shareholders foresee the successful candidate remaining in post for a minimum of five years, with an initial contract for three years. There is a highly competitive salary package available for the successful candidate, including private medical cover for the Head and their family, return flights each year, a substantial residential allowance, free schooling for all school age children of the Head, and subject to agreed KPIs, a significant bonus scheme as agreed by the board. The cumulative package would be worth in excess of a seven figure sum (UK pre-tax equivalent) over five years.

Haileybury Astana (HAS), located in the capital city, Astana, is the second Haileybury school in Kazakhstan. It has a growing roll that currently stands at 670 pupils from kindergarten to Year 13. The teaching medium is English with additional teaching of Kazakh language and history.

Haileybury Astana has a significant profile within the country and further afield and has been visited by many national and international politicians and other significant personalities including the First President of Kazakhstan, Mr Nursultan Nazarbayev, various European royalty and individuals from the world of sport and the arts.

Astana is a purpose built, modern, international, rapidly growing cosmopolitan city. Haileybury Astana was formally opened by The First President in September 2011.

The school initially took pupils only from years 1 to 6 but is now populated up to year 13 with the Junior school offering a mix of National Curriculum and the IPC up to year 6. The first cohort of IGCSE pupils taking public exams was in summer 2017 and IB diploma in summer 2019. It draws on the educational values and ethos of Haileybury UK and has increasing connections with Haileybury College to ensure that pupils of the school are able to benefit from educational opportunities offered by the UK in the form of reciprocal visits, tours and planned exchanges.

The school also offers a wide range of extra curricular activities and is increasingly becoming an academically successful school.

Continued professional development is an important aspect of staff support at Haileybury Astana. Reciprocal opportunities in conjunction with Haileybury UK are planned, and the school offers both the NPQML and the NPQSL in-house in association with UCL as professional qualifications for aspiring staff.

Despite being a day school, Haileybury Astana operates a House system with four Houses named after famous Haileybury alumni: Attlee, Bartle Frere, Edmonstone and Kipling. House competitions take place during the year and the academic progress of pupils, participation in school life, concerts, sport and contribution to the community are all rewarded by the House system.

Mr John Coles, the Headmaster of Haileybury Astana, was appointed in September 2020.
