A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR AN INDIVIDUAL WHOSE VISION, TALENTS AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS CHALLENGE THE NORM

East Barnet is a thriving 11-19 comprehensive stand-alone academy which serves its local community. The school was rebuilt in 2010 and provides a wonderful environment for learning and extracurricular activities. It is very popular and highly over-subscribed. While it was judged ‘good’ by Ofsted, those who know it consider the school to be outstanding in many respects. Indeed, East Barnet has been cited as an example of best practice in a number of Ofsted and other national reports.

The successful candidate will provide inspirational leadership that recognises and builds on the school’s many strengths, while identifying and rigorously addressing aspects of school performance that could be even better. They, with the support and backing of governors, will promote an outstanding educational experience that will equip all students to be successful learners and citizens; confident, independent and well prepared for the next stages in their education, training or chosen career. In so doing, they will ensure that teaching is reflective and developmental, that the curriculum is rich and vibrant, and that students attend and behave well because they subscribe to the school’s “I want to learn” philosophy.

The new headteacher will provide dynamic leadership, while nurturing the capacity of middle and senior leaders to develop their roles as a coherent and united team. They will work with governors, parents and other stakeholders to ensure that the interests, welfare and success of students are at the heart of the school’s actions.

Our most recent Ofsted report said, “Leaders and Governors at East Barnet School rightly have regard to national changes in education, examinations and performance tables but are not driven by them.” The new headteacher will have the freedom to challenge the expected norms; to push at the boundaries of convention; and so deliver innovations which amaze, motivate, challenge and enthuse both students and staff to excel.

Application packs are available on our website www.eastbarnetschool.com

We would be very pleased to arrange a visit to the school in advance of application or interview. Please contact our clerk to governors, Renata Bryant, at rbryant@eastbarnetschool.com to arrange this.

Interviews will take place:  Week beginning Monday, 18th June 2018

East Barnet School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. The successful candidate will undergo checks with previous employers and will be subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure.

East Barnet School first opened in 1937, but has only had five Headteachers in over 80 years of operation. We now have a state-of-the-art modern building which opened in September 2010 and was designed in close consultation with staff and students to capture the school’s "I want to learn" philosophy. We became an Academy in April 2011.

Our school is characterised by our outstanding pastoral system, the excellent support we provide for our staff and our philosophy of compassionate leadership. East Barnet School was delighted to be awarded the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools ‘School Mental Health Award’ at Silver Level in March 2020. The school was recognised by the Lead Coach as having a warm and nurturing environment where staff and students are well supported. The school is leading the way on a wide variety of mental health partnerships in the area.

The wellbeing of our students is vitally important, and so is the wellbeing of our staff. The school has a Staff Council where new ideas are presented to the Headteacher (we have a Student Council too!), and we offer various sporting activities for staff to take part in after school - or join other members of the team in taking a walk round our cycle track during lunchtime! To make life a little easier for busy staff, we also have a dry cleaning pick-up and drop-off service, car washing, and Mindfulness sessions, along with other initiatives to improve work-life balance.

Our Motto, "I want to learn" reflects a belief that motivation is the most important factor for achieving successes in education. We also know that interesting and challenging lessons, combined with a culture where educational success is valued and respected by all members of the school community will ensure that students remain focused on learning. Our success in achieving such a culture is undoubtedly the reason for the high academic standards and popularity of East Barnet School.

Behaviour and safety were judged to be outstanding at the last OFSTED inspection. Exclusions are relatively low and attendance is very high. However, the ethos of our school is more wide ranging and richer than these basic tenets. We aspire to develop in all our students the personal qualities which are required for successful adult lives, and to instil attitudes and behaviours that will help them to make a positive contribution to their communities and the wider world.

We are proud of being a true comprehensive school, where students throughout the ability range are able to achieve success. We celebrate our diversity and respect the heritage, religion and culture of all our students and staff.

A number of our members of staff have children who attend the school, and many were ex-students themselves. We therefore have a very strong community spirit and are committed to providing all our children with the best education possible.

East Barnet School may have a fabulous building, but it is the people that make it really special.

Together we are #TeamEBS!
