Job overview

Bolton St Catherine’s Academy is an ambitious, inclusive and popular 3-19 school in Bolton with over 1100 on roll. This includes 315 in the primary phase and 84 in sixth form. The school is very popular with parents and carers and the primary and secondary phases are oversubscribed. The state of the art premises, opened in 2012, provide children and young people with a bright and motivational learning environment and are a focal point for the local community.

The school is proud of its many strengths; 16 to 19 study programmes that support many students to reach university, an effective primary phase particularly the early years’ provision which is rated as Good and the exceptional pastoral care across the school. It is now recruiting a new Headteacher who will harness its significant potential and provide the strategic vision and dynamic leadership to drive future improvement in all areas.

Governors and staff at the school recognise the need for further improvement and are committed to working with the new Headteacher to deliver these. There is a determination to improve results at KS4, to maximise the opportunities of being an all-through school and to make further improvements to the primary and sixth form provisions.

This is an exciting time in the school's development as it is currently planning to form a Multi Academy Trust with St James’s CE High School and Canon Slade CE High School, both of which are fellow Diocesan Secondary schools in Bolton. The new Headteacher will work closely with the CEO of the MAT, the Trustees and their own Local Governing Body. The process of forming the MAT is anticipated to be completed by June 2017. This is an outstanding opportunity to join a new MAT and to shape the way these relationships work for the good of the students.

This is a pivotal time for the school and the Governing Body, while recognising the many challenges that lie ahead, are looking to appoint a new Headteacher who shares their excitement and who can harness the many strengths of the school, leading it to a confident and successful future. Applicants must be passionate about providing high quality teaching and learning and enjoy working with children and young people. It is not essential that the new Headteacher is a practising Christian but they will be expected to promote the ethos and values of a Church of England school.

You must be an experienced senior leader in a secondary setting, with a successful track record of sustained improvement and a determination to maximise the opportunities available. Applicants must be highly motivated, driven, and have an in-depth knowledge of excellence in education. You should have the creativity and vision to inspire and lead change along with the focus and resilience to ensure successful outcomes are achieved. You will need a positive ‘can-do’ attitude that inspires and engages students, parents/carers and staff alike. You must display compassion, be familiar with holding staff to account and also being accountable for outcomes. Fundamental to your educational philosophy is a conviction that every decision you make should be focused on improving the learning and developing the potential of each student in your care.

Bolton St Catherine’s Academy is located in a £36 million building with innovative spaces and state of the art facilities to support children’s learning. These facilities are amongst the very best in the country and support us in delivering a rich, varied and relevant curriculum and fantastic extra curricular activities outside the classroom. We are co-located with Firwood High School with whom we share some central facilities and to whom we also provide some ancillary services.

Bolton St Catherine’s Academy is an inclusive, purposeful and high achieving educational community for children and young people aged 3 to 19. The Christian values of hope, valuing self and others, responsibility, truth, forgiveness and justice pervade all aspects of Academy life. The care, guidance and support for our children and young people are exceptional. Our specialisms are business and enterprise, leadership and mathematics and we promote life-long learning.

It is an exciting time to be joining us as we work hard to improve and bring in line our KS4 outcomes with those in our primary and 6th form phases which are already considered to be good. We are in the final stages of consultation to join two outstanding schools in the newly formed Bishop Fraser Trust early next year - St James’s C of E High School and Canon Slade School, where there will be opportunities to work collaboratively within the wider MAT community, sharing good practice and building on the much needed improvement work and progress that has been taking place in our secondary phase this year. As a family of Church of England schools we believe we can offer more opportunities to pupils and staff and continue to create an educational environment which celebrates the uniqueness of every child.

Through the values of  • Work hard. • Be respectful and honest. • Value others and relationships with them •  we continue to build on the progress we have made. Our Secondary and Primary schools are full again this year and not forgetting that in 2016 Ofsted judged our Primary School and Sixth Form as "Good". Our Primary school has also gained the best KS2 results of any school in the BL2 postcode area. We continue to develop the mind set and culture within the Academy so that every member of our community, students and staff, strives hard to make progress and takes immense pride in their effort and work.

Our students will leave us with:  • Good academic outcomes • The Christian values of respect, tolerance and service • A positive and enduring outlook  so that they live happy, healthy and purposeful lives – irrespective of their background or circumstances.
