St Martins School is an outstanding, inclusive and forward-thinking specialist academy for young people aged 11-19 with a wide range of Special Educational Needs, including MLD, ASC, and additional complex needs. The academy is situated on the Derwent Campus in Derby with the majority of Post 16 students accessing their education at the Horizons provision in the city centre. The school also runs a DFN Project SEARCH, a supported internship programme. Student numbers have grown in recent years and there are now 207 on roll across all sites. With the retirement of the current Headteacher there is now an amazing opportunity for a new Headteacher to build on the school’s significant strengths, leading it to even greater success in the future.
St Martins has an excellent reputation locally and has been graded by Ofsted as being ‘Outstanding’ for a number of years. This sustained success has been achieved by a committed team of staff working together to actively promote inclusion for all of the students and their families. Teachers, support staff and professional partners work hard to understand the complexities of the students, and meet their needs in a personalised way, that expects highly of them. This aspirational learning environment empowers the young people towards an independent and successful future.
The school is part of The Shaw Education Trust, a MAT consisting of 25 mainstream and special schools along with 3 Teaching Schools, a SCITT and an Institute of Education. It is sponsored by a third sector charity, The Shaw Trust. It is an innovative, aspirational and motivated Trust, determined to affect positive outcomes for all. You will be encouraged to be creative and ground-breaking and will be part of a network offering excellent support with exceptional, high quality professional development at the heart of the Trust’s approach.
St Martins is now at an exciting stage in its development. The need for places in the special schools in the area is significant with an ever more complex cohort. The new Headteacher must have the ambition to ensure that the school is leading the way in supporting this, allowing more young people to benefit from the expertise it offers. There is also an ambition for the school to further develop projects to ensure that preparation for adulthood, work related learning and vocational opportunities are central to its development.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate recent, successful and sustained impact as a senior leader in an SEN setting. Your inspirational energies will harness a collective motivation which will trigger accelerated performance and awesome outcomes for the young people. You should have the creativity and vision to inspire and lead change but also the focus to ensure successful outcomes are reached. Your positive attitude will inspire and engage the young people, parents/carers, staff and the local community and see St Martins recognised as a beacon of excellence. You must be confident, approachable and have the skills to build high performing teams and a positive culture. Above all, you will share the school and the Trust’s relentless focus on providing the very best for all its young people with a vision for continuing success and future development.
