Job overview

‘Do you relish the opportunity to grow and develop a new school that will significantly enhance the opportunities for children with SEND in Devon?’

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join Glendinning House as Headteacher two terms before opening our brand new, purpose built school for pupils with social communication and interaction needs.

Glendinning House will open in Sep 2020 and will grow over the following 5/6 years to provide places for 120 pupils from KS3 to KS5, ages 7 to 19.  Located in Newton Abbot it will provide a much needed school for pupils with social communication and interaction difficulties including Autism Spectrum Condition who are unable to attend mainstream school due to sensory processing and anxiety related barriers.  Our innovative curriculum places the outdoors and nature at the heart of our everyday experiences.  These experiences provide paths to skill development, learning, understanding and enjoyment.

We are looking for someone who can work with us to deliver our vision of;

  • Enjoy, progress and achieve; we will provide the environment and support that will ensure this.
  • Personalised; all pupils will have a personalised curriculum with ambitious personal targets.
  • Equity and Partnerships; pupils’ success will be supported by the team around each child; school and home working in partnership.
  • Developing Independence; a vital focus for each pupil.  Adapting and developing as they progress.
  • Experiential Outdoor Curriculum; learning through ‘doing’ in the context of nature and the outdoors will provide practical experiences which strengthen traditional classroom learning.
  • Building Positive Relationships; is at the heart of our curriculum and community.

We would like to recruit a talented and inspirational leader to take on the position of Headteacher of Glendinning House Academy who has substantial leadership experience at a senior pastoral or curriculum level and of working with SEND pupils; with a proven track record of success and innovation.  The successful candidate will report directly to the Executive Principal of South Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust and work collectively with Glendinning House’s local governing body.

This role consists of 2 phases; phase 1 requires a leader who can identify clear outcomes in order to grow the school during pre-opening, working with our team to achieve the vision of how the school will look and feel for our pupils and developing the strategy to achieve this.  Phase 2 is when the school is open and our Headteacher is able to work with pupils, families and our team to develop and embed the school vision, ethos and pupil experiences.

In return South Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust can offer the opportunity to work within a supportive, thriving and diverse organisation including; Primary, Secondary, Sixth form and Studio Schools which values team work, collaboration and professional development.  We provide a rich, broad and balanced 2 to 19 education for our wide reaching community.

This is a rare opportunity to work with a dedicated and passionate MAT team, opening a brand new special school with an innovative curriculum meeting the needs of our pupils.
