Job overview

Dorset Learn Today for Life Tomorrow

The Governors are seeking to appoint an inspirational leader to our successful 9-13 Middle School Academy.

This position has become vacant due to the promotion of the existing Head teacher to an Executive Headteacher post.

Dorchester Middle School is located in the attractive County Town of Dorchester, which sits some 8 miles from the Jurassic Coast in the glorious countryside of West Dorset. The School converted to become a single Academy in June 2012.

It is a large 9-13 Community Middle deemed secondary school serving a diverse community and represents fully comprehensive education at its best. Most of our pupils feed into the very successful Thomas Hardye School Multi Academy Trust which is on an adjacent site. Dorchester Middle School is very popular with parents and in March 2014 gained a grading of ‘Good’ during its Ofsted Inspection. It is part of the successful Dorchester Area Schools Partnership (DASP) of local First, Middle and Upper schools who share resources, planning and expertise in order to enhance continuity across all stages of the childrens’ education.

This school of 600 pupils has very good facilities, playing fields and grounds, and younger pupils also benefit from the specialist accommodation and resources provided for the KS3 curriculum.

Within the school there is also a Speech and Language base and a Physical and Sensory Disability base. Consequently the school is able to achieve a high level of inclusivity, which Ofsted recognised as a particular strength.

The Governors seek to appoint a Headteacher who can provide enthusiastic and energetic leadership. With clear, strategic vision, you will display high calibre inter-personal and communication skills, complemented by your ability to motivate and inspire students, staff and parents.

The successful applicant must have proven leadership skills and be able to build on the school’s present strengths as a Good school to aspire to an Outstanding rating from Ofsted in the near future. In addition, you should have the ability to deliver first class educational outcomes for all students, irrespective of their individual capabilities.

If you would like to discuss this post with the Chair or Governors, Mrs Jo Taylor, and/or to arrange an informal visit to the school, please contact our Office Manager, Mrs D Shutts on 01305 265651 or via email dshutts@dmsschool.co.uk to arrange a convenient time.

An information pack and application form are available on our school website: http://www.dorchestermid.dorset.sch.uk/job-vacancies/

Closing date for applications is Monday 29th February 2016 and interviews will be held on Wednesday 9th March.

Values and Vision

Dorchester Middle School is a place that provides students with a basis to succeed in later life, as shown by the motto “learn today for life tomorrow”. It is built on the belief that each child has their own unique strengths. Teaching and learning is based around inclusion, support, challenge and empowerment, to ensure that students achieve to their full ability. High expectations and aspirations help give students an incentive to work hard and leave the school as confident and well-rounded young people.

Ofsted

“This school is a successful learning community in which individual pupils are valued, encouraged and kept safe. Pupils are taught well and encouraged to achieve their best; they are therefore suitably prepared for their next schools. Because the school aims to give all pupils the best chances in life, there is effective support in place for vulnerable pupils and for those who find learning more difficult. [Pupils’] attitudes to learning are typically good and it is usual to see respectful behaviour around the school.”
