Job overview

The Governors wish to appoint an outstanding educationalist to lead this highly successful, friendly grammar school, building upon the significant achievements of the Headteacher, Mrs Ewa Sawicka, who is retiring after eleven years’ distinguished service. The ideal candidate will be an exceptional leader who will nurture all that is remarkable at the High School for Girls; one who  believes that it is the role of a great school to do all in its power to develop both the academic life and character of its students. The Governors welcome applications from professionals from  selective and non-selective state maintained schools as well as from the independent sector.

The High School for Girls is an over-subscribed girls’ selective school which is increasing its year 7 intake to 150 students from September 2017. The current roll of 819 includes 196 students in its highly successful co-educational Sixth Form. It is anticipated that the school roll will increase to approximately 1000 by 2021. The school became an Academy in 2012.

The school has been judged ‘Outstanding’ in every aspect by Ofsted. Examination results at GCSE and A level consistently place the school amongst the highest achieving in the country. The school is officially the 6th best school in the South West and the 48th in the country for A*-B grades at A Level and A*-A grades at GCSE according to the Sunday Times.  The High School for Girls ascribes great importance to its extensive co-curricular programme which includes a wide range of oppor-tunities for all students in sport, the arts and foreign visits. Most importantly, the nurturing of genuinely thoughtful and caring young people with a social conscience and a generosity of heart is a central feature of the school.

The High School for Girls is situated in the centre of Gloucester, the cathedral city of the Cotswolds and the vibrant hub within the west country of England.  The city is well connected with the rest of the UK, with Bristol, Birmingham and Cardiff less than an hour away by rail.

The closing date for applications is noon Thursday 15th June 2017.  Applications should be emailed to voycel@hsfg.org or posted to Kate Abbott, C/o The Headteacher’s PA, The High School for Girls, Denmark Road, Gloucester GL1 3JN.
