About Wentworth Nursery School and Children's Centre

Wentworth Nursery School and Children’s Centre is an outstanding local authority maintained nursery school and children’s centre in the East London borough of Hackney.

We serve a community of great cultural, ethnic and social diversity, with over 30 languages spoken amongst our children! This is reflected and celebrated in our curriculum and activities. We are passionately committed to a child-centred approach, promoting high achievement, wellbeing for all and successful inclusion for children and adults with special educational needs and disabilities.

“Whatever their background, home language or ability, children make excellent progress…” – Ofsted 2013

The school opened in 1950 and has since grown and developed. In 2008 we opened our children’s centre in a nearby building. Operating from the two sites and led by the Headteacher and governing body, our multidisciplinary team of 30 staff (including 6 teachers) shares joint vision and values. We place great emphasis on continual training and development for all staff.

We currently have provision for 90 three and four year olds in the school; 34 attending full-time and the rest for 15hrs. They learn through a rich, stimulating and broad curriculum in a caring, safe, but challenging environment, supported by outstanding teaching. Both our sites have large outdoor spaces which are key to learning. We work with parents to support children’s learning at home.

Located in an area of high social and economic deprivation, we work to support many more families in bringing up their young children, via our children’s centre. Our exciting programme (offered in conjunction with statutory and VCS partners) includes: stay-and-play; health services; parenting and family support; jobseeking advice, adult and family learning (including ICT and ESOL). Keeping children safe is paramount and permeates all our work.

We are well placed for local amenities including Victoria Park, two libraries and other community services, which we regularly use to enrich the curriculum and broaden the horizons for our children and their families.
