From September 2012, Heathlands School will be making significant changes, so it is an exciting time for a new head teacher to contribute to the next phase of the school’s development. The school has extensive grounds and buildings.

An all-age school on one site

In September 2012 Heathlands will become an all-age school on one site.

Previously, the school has operated on 3 sites:

  • Nursery and primary pupils at Heathlands main site, together with all boarders, who are accommodated at Heath House, and the British Sign Language Centre
  • The majority of secondary students at a local secondary school
  • Secondary pupils who have more complex needs, at a secondary special school.

With money provided by the Local Authority and by Heathlands, the main site is being converted to accommodate all secondary as well as primary pupils. The ground floor of Heath House is being made into a secondary teaching block, with boarders being accommodated on the 1st floor. The entrance has already been converted to form a Reception Area for secondary students and a Food Technology room is nearing completion.

Additional teachers of the deaf are being employed. Although the move has not been one that Heathlands sought to make, but has come about due to circumstances beyond the school’s control, the quality of teaching will be enhanced and a broad curriculum will continue to offered, in order to meet the needs of profoundly deaf pupils who are aiming for GCSEs and A levels, as well as for those who follow alternative accredited courses. The school will be working with a range of secondary schools in the area, to ensure that  pupils continue to have opportunities to learn and to socialise alongside their hearing peers.

Academy status

Heathlands was among the first special schools to be invited to become an academy and the consultations that have been held showed that everyone is in agreement. Most of the paperwork has been completed with the support of a solicitor and the Local Authority. The date of conversion has been delayed due to the other changes that the school is making, but it is hoped to convert in the very near future.
