Abel Smith School is a one form entry primary school with a thriving pre school and nursery located in the town centre of Hertford. The age range is 2 years 6 months to 11 years and most children live within a 1.5K radius of the school. We currently have 261 children on our roll.

Abel Smith has been at the heart of the Hertford community for over 150 years. We are proud of our heritage and have a wonderful balance of tradition and modern, enquiry-based teaching and learning that encourages independence, a growth mindset and inquisitive children who love learning.  In terms of the main school, the proportion of free school meals (5.7%), special educational needs (8.4%) and English as an additional language (6.9%) is low when compared nationally.

Behaviour across the school is exemplary because Abel Smith is a positive environment where we promote the values, which we believe to be essential to lead a happy and useful life alongside others. Pupils have a positive attitude towards each other and are consistently polite and respectful to adults.

Vision and Values
The driving force behind all that happens at Abel Smith is the shared aim of every child enjoying access to a stimulating and engaging education, developing both academically and socially and leaving us as life long, independent learners.

Abel Smith has a culture of high aspiration and expectation for each and every child, which enables our children to acquire knowledge, understanding and develop learning throughout the school.  We may achieve excellent results, but this is secondary to our belief in an inclusive environment and the individual experience of every child. We work very hard to ensure that children are nurtured and have access to a wide variety of experiences to support their development and well-being.

Teaching and learning
The quality of teaching and learning to raise pupil progress and achievement is consistently good and outstanding. Excellent provision including well established routines and relationships enable children to be confident, enthusiastic and motivated learners. Our emphasis is very clearly on reading, writing and numeracy.

Staff
We have a very strong staff and senior leadership team. We are able to retain and attract excellent teachers and support staff by ensuring that Abel Smith is a positive place to be. We have a low staff turnover as we work in a collaborative way and try very hard to ensure that everybody feels both valued and supported. We see the value in helping our team be the best that they can be by ensuring appropriate career development and working in partnership with schools in our community, teaching schools and other agencies.

Finance
The school budget is prudently managed by the head with the assistance of local authority financial services and the resources committee. The resources committee tracks the monthly budget statements against the needs and priorities of the school improvement plan. The school meets the requirements of the School Financial Values Standards.

Community
We are an outward facing school and work in partnership with local primary and secondary schools.  We take our vision to equip our children for life as global citizens seriously and this year we have developed a link with Times College school in China.  Abel Smith children and staff have already visited China and we have welcomed a group of children and their teachers from Times College. Family attendance at open evenings, parent consultations, end of year performances and information evenings is very high, demonstrating strong support for the school and parents’ engagement in their children’s learning.

Governing body
The governors are fully committed to supporting the head teacher and leadership team to continue to provide the very best education and school experience for our children. The relationship between the governors and the leadership team is positive and based upon trust, openness and transparency. The governors provide a robust challenge to the head ensuring that targets are appropriate, that there is a drive for continuous improvement and that the budget is wisely allocated. Governors are well informed and know the school very well. Governors are often in school listening to children read and meeting with subject leaders and also take the opportunity to talk to parents at consultation evenings or forum sessions.

In Conclusion
Through effective teaching and learning, a rich curriculum and a thoughtful and wide ranging promotion of pupil’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, children thrive at Abel Smith. Consequently our pupils thoroughly enjoy school and learning. They have excellent experiences ensuring they are well equipped for the next stage of their education.
