Job overview

The Malling School offers students of all abilities the opportunity to learn in a happy and safe environment. Central to the school’s objectives are preparation for life after school, including optimising students’ examination potential.

The Malling School is an Ofsted Grade 2 secondary school, which is seeking to appoint a new Headteacher, who will be able to consolidate and build on our successes and improve the school in areas where we are less strong. Our school is a mixed 11-19 co-educational High School of 900 pupils based in East Malling, Kent, close to Maidstone. An important part of the school is the Tydeman Centre, which offers specialist provision for pupils with speech, language and communication needs and/or autistic spectrum disorders.

The school enjoys an enviable reputation as a caring and inclusive place to learn, catering for a wide range of needs and abilities. This is reflected in it being the local high school of choice, having been over-subscribed, through first choice applications alone, for the last two years. Our sixth form students are encouraged to follow the International Baccalaureate Career related Programme.

Aided by a strong support team, The Malling School has been expanding its outreach to other schools, particularly local primary schools. The governors would like a new Headteacher to build upon existing initiatives to encourage close collaboration.

The new Head will join at a time when there is real opportunity not only to consolidate our strong caring environment but to improve our academic results and shape future strategy. There are no restrictions on the scope of thinking or ideas - other than to ensure the school becomes outstanding, both in Ofsted’s eyes and in the eyes of its pupils, parents, staff and the wider community.

The Governors are seeking to appoint a dynamic and aspirational Headteacher who will:

  • Improve academic results to the point that they are outstanding
  • Maintain and strengthen our position as a caring and inclusive school
  • Be passionate about realising pupils’ potential, maintaining our vision to create lifelong learners, enabling them to meet the challenges of the ever-changing world
  • Be an exceptional leader, able to inspire and empower staff to deliver the highest quality teaching and learning and embed excellence at every level
  • Be a strong, visible and collaborative leader, who will develop our links in the community and consolidate and continue to improve the reputation of the school

We encourage you to visit us and we hope that you will be excited by the opportunities we have to offer: our positive, innovative atmosphere, our excellent and committed staff and our engaged pupils.

The Malling School

A mixed 11-19 co-educational High School of 1000 pupils serving the historic market town of West Malling and surrounding villages. The school is set in pleasant rural surroundings and has its own lake and extensive grounds. It was completely re-built in September 2007 and therefore has outstanding facilities.

West Malling is close to the county town of Maidstone and has excellent rail links to London and Ashford International (for the Continent).

This is an exciting time to be joining the staff of The Malling School.

Our school is increasingly becoming the first choice school for parents. As a result we are currently oversubscribed. We have robust behavioural systems and Developmental Learning Walks, rather than formal observations. All of which allow a teacher to flourish and do what they do best – teach!

We provide a very supportive environment in which staff can further develop their skills and we ensure every new member of staff has access to a trained coach. With close teams of teachers and non-teachers working together we take a collaborative approach to school improvement and have a shared aim of providing the very best education for our pupils.
