Job overview

Archbishop Sumner is an outstanding Church of England nursery and primary school in Kennington, just a short walk from the Thames in south east London.  Our children and staff reflect the rich cultural diversity of our local community and we have very close links with the Parish of North Lambeth.

The school was judged ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in 2014, and we recently opened our Language Resource Base on site.  Our aim is to ensure that each child gains self-belief and achieves their full potential as a child of God and valued member of the community.  We want our school to continue growing and are constantly seeking to improve and find new and better ways of developing and enriching our children’s lives.

We are looking for a new Headteacher, an inspirational leader to develop and implement strategic direction and deliver our vision for the future, ensuring all pupils receive an outstanding education that equips them for life academically, spiritually and morally.  An outstanding educationalist, committed to maintaining and developing the school’s positive parish and community links, able to actively engage with that community and with staff, parents and carers to do the best for our children.  Someone who is respectful of the Church faith and diverse faiths of our pupils and wider community.

Our school prides itself on having a welcoming atmosphere.  Many years ago, following Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s opening of the school’s courtyard garden, a visitor wrote saying "The Archbishop was right.  You have created a garden of delight, a place of flourishing life and sheer exuberance."   We can promise an Archbishop Sumner welcome to our new Headteacher, along with the enthusiastic support of the governors and the whole school.

An application form and pack providing more detailed information about our school and the post, including job description and person specification, are attached.  These can also be obtained from our School Business Manager, Hazel Thompson, on 020 7735 2781, email: hthompson@absprimary.school

Completed applications to be emailed to Hazel Thompson by 14th February 2019. Supporting statements should not exceed three pages.

Interviews will take place at Archbishop Sumner on 5th and/or 6th March 2019.

School visits are strongly encouraged. To make an appointment please contact Hazel Thompson.

Candidates may also wish to contact Ros Scherler, School Improvement Adviser, on 07986 643456, email: RScherler@lambeth.gov.uk
