Job overview

Burnage Academy for Boys has a clear and shared ambition - ‘be the best you can be’. With the upcoming retirement of its current Headteacher, Governors are looking to recruit a new Headteacher who shares this ambition, can harness its many strengths and improve still further the high levels of progress, personal achievement and academic success.

Burnage Academy is an ambitious and inclusive 11-16 all-boys school in Manchester with 900 on roll. The school is in a bright and modern building with excellent facilities providing an inspiring and purposeful learning environment. The school serves a community with a number of challenges, including a significant number of ‘disadvantaged’ students. There is a shared focus on meeting the needs of individual students with a clear moral purpose and commitment to ensuring that students' aspirations and futures are highly successful and prosperous. This approach has proven to win the confidence and respect of the students, promoting good behaviour, high standards of work and excellent progress which has improved in each of the last 3 years.

The school was last inspected in October 2018 when it was graded as ‘Outstanding’. At the heart of this success is a talented, dedicated, knowledgeable and hardworking staff. The school places great importance on wellbeing and opportunities for professional development and this has supported a strong team culture. Staff are committed to ensuring the needs of the students continue to be met and recognise that to do that they must continually refine and improve their practice and are motivated to work with the new Headteacher to achieve that.

This is an important and exciting time for the school and for the new Headteacher. The Governors recognise the challenges that lie ahead and are looking to appoint and work with a new Headteacher who shares their values and determination to improve the school further. That leader will engage staff and the wider community to confidently build on the many strengths of the school and lead it into an even more successful future.

If you are a dynamic and experienced senior leader in a secondary setting this role offers you an outstanding opportunity to challenge yourself in a new environment.  You must have a successful track record of sustained improvement and the vision to maximise the opportunities available. You will be highly motivated and energetic with the ability to find innovative ways to improve performance resulting in the highest quality of teaching and learning. You will have the creativity and vision to inspire and lead change together with the focus to ensure successful outcomes are reached.  You will have a positive attitude that will strengthen and build partnerships within the community and motivate students and staff.  Whilst displaying compassion and understanding, you will be skilled at holding staff to account and be accustomed to personal accountability for student outcomes and all aspects of your work.  Above all you will be aligned with the school’s ethos, ensuring that the young people, their learning and developing their potential remains at the heart of all decisions.
