Job overview

We are keen to appoint an exceptional school leader to guide a talented and experienced group of staff to achieve the best possible outcomes for all our students.  Whether you are a Deputy aspiring to such a role, or an existing Headteacher, you will need to be ambitious and student focused with a track record of successfully leading significant areas of your school.  Your natural approach will be to work with and through others. We are looking for an individual who is committed to academic excellence while advancing equality and overcoming disadvantage.

Our School has a strong tradition and outstanding potential.  As a Voluntary Controlled boys’ school, we are proud of our history and links with the local community, while accepting these links could be developed further.  Currently we have just under 1,200 students in year groups 7-11 and in a soft partnership with Ricards Lodge High School, a mixed sixth form of 300.  Our intake has become academically more able in recent years as we have attracted more local students. It has a culturally diverse and mixed ability intake - half our students have English as an additional language and we have a good number of SEN-K and pupil premium students.

We have achieved much in the last few years and this has led to improved progress levels and academic achievement that culminated in an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted judgement in 2017.  Key to our success and commented on by Ofsted was student behaviour which was described as “impeccable”.

Whilst standards are high, there is still more to do and we continue to be ambitious for further improvement.  We are looking for a Headteacher who fully supports our philosophy where every student is encouraged to excel in whatever area – academic, sport, arts or creative disciplines.  We look for a good balance between development of our students and exam success that will equip our students to play a full part in society in their later lives. We are keen for our students to be encouraged to pursue their interests rather than just being pushed down narrow paths to enhance performance table scores.

If you feel you have the skills and expertise to lead us to further success, then do contact our advising consultants.  Further information can be found at www.pentir.com/rutlish. For a confidential discussion please call our advising consultants Tom Atkins (07879 435232) or Mike Phillips (07830 313915) at Pentir.

Rutlish School is a voluntary-controlled secondary boys' school based in Merton, south-west London, for students aged 11-18.

Headteacher

Ms Laura Howarth

Values and vision

Rutlish School aims to create an environment where boys and staff behave responsibly and contribute fully as they develop a clear sense of belonging to the school community. The secondary school is committed to educating the whole person and helping its pupils to understand the importance of responsibility, compassion, competition, fairness and honesty in all that they do.

Teaching students the skills of self-discipline, co-operation, respect and tolerance is seen as essential, as without these skills it is believed that academic objectives cannot be reached.

Ofsted report

“The boys are proud to be members of the school; they feel safe and their behaviour is considerate and courteous. Internal and external exclusions have fallen rapidly as a result of consistent policies and careful monitoring. The headteacher and senior leaders, including governors, have been successful in their relentless focus on improving teaching and raising achievement. Staff morale is high and parents and carers express confidence in the leadership and management of the school. The curriculum and students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development are strengths.”
