Job overview

Make one of the best schools even better

Due to the forthcoming retirement of the headteacher, we are seeking to appoint an outstanding individual who is a creative thinker possessing enthusiasm, drive, energy and ambition to lead the school through its next stage of development and who places students at the heart of everything they do by motivating, as well as empowering both students and staff to develop their individual talents.

At Newport Girls’ High School we are proud of our record of academic excellence, which is achieved within a friendly, caring and welcoming environment. The school enjoys a national profile for high standards at both GCSE and A level and is justly proud of its broad and flexible curriculum. We are looking for an exceptional individual who can maintain and improve upon our ‘outstanding’ academic performance.

The school has grown over the last five years and the vision is for further expansion in line with the growth of the town which will need to continue and develop into the Sixth Form. This would move the School into a Group 6 category with a commensurate increase in Headteacher pay range. The exciting addition of new Sixth Form accommodation and classrooms will provide an outstanding learning environment to ensure our students are well prepared for their futures.

Our ideal candidate will be the current headteacher, deputy head or assistant head of a high-performing school, with proven range of senior management skills and strong leadership qualities. This is a challenging role, yet promises to be one of the most rewarding positions in the profession. We envisage the post appealing to a variety of candidates including those aspiring to their first headship as well as those with an experienced track record. The Academy would consider offering a recruitment incentive towards reimbursement of reasonably incurred housing or relocation costs.

Newport Girls’ High School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share in this commitment. The post is subject to reference checks with existing and previous employers, enhanced DBS and safeguarding checks.

Closing date: noon on 21st June 2017
Interview dates: Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th July 2017

Newport Girls’ High School is a girls' grammar school located in the market town of Newport, Shropshire. With around 680 pupils aged 11-18, the school is a selective academy, with entrance examinations required of any prospective students.

In 2019, the School was successful in gaining £2.3m to expand further under the government's Selective Schools Expansion Fund. An additional 30 pupils per year joined the school at Year 7 from September 2021 and an ambitious building programme (dining room, kitchen, science laboratory, computer suite and four classrooms) opened in January 2022.

The school’s sixth form is also open to students from other local schools. Newport Girls' High School converted to an academy in 2012 and operates under its own trust.
