Our mission is to deliver primary education of the highest standard in an inclusive church school. The size and structure of the school enables the children to value and support each other, leading to the development of a friendly, cohesive community.

Currently rated as Outstanding by Ofsted, Horton-in-Ribblesdale Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School represents an excellent opportunity for a headteacher to lead, shape and influence our future and ensure our continued success.

Horton-in-Ribblesdale is located within the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park. The school has strong and positive relationships with parents, the village church, local community and a supportive governing body.

We are seeking to appoint a committed and experienced professional who is able to effectively motivate, inspire and influence pupils, staff and stakeholders. You will assume responsibility for all aspects of school life including shaping the school’s strategic planning and delivering an outstanding provision which meets the needs of all our young people. You will effectively promote the strengths of the school and explore collaborative options and opportunities to develop partnerships.

  • be a proven leader and manager,
  • understand the needs and demands of a small rural school,
  • have the ability to develop a small team and maximise pupil numbers and achievement,
  • be an excellent communicator with a range of audiences, including the governing body,
  • be able to influence stakeholders, particularly in the area of collaboration, and be able to develop good relationships within the school and in the wider community.

In return, we can offer you strong support, freedom to shape the future of the school and the opportunity for your continued professional development.

About the school

There has been an education facility in Horton-in-Ribblesdale since 1725, and the school is currently providing excellent education in our diverse community.

  • The school has strong and positive relationships with parents and the governing body is fully engaged. Parents are actively involved, and volunteers regularly support the school.
  • The school is also a member of the local cluster that meet regularly to share best practice and is developing links with the wider schools community. Relations with the local authority and diocese are good.

We would strongly encourage you to visit our website at http://www.horton-in-ribblesdale.n-yorks.sch.uk/  to find out much more about us.

Current Strengths

The last two Ofsted inspections have rated the school as Outstanding and very highly achieving academically. The school provides wrap around care, academic school trips every term and swimming lessons for all pupils.

Pupils engage in a flexible and creative curriculum in a stimulating and challenging environment.

In addition, the school has set a balanced budget for 2016/17 with reserves carried forward.

Challenges and Opportunities.

  • Maintenance and development of high quality of education - In the short term, there will be some staff recruitment and the new Headteacher will need to establish themselves quickly to reassure parents. The new Headteacher will need to maintain SATS results (currently amongst the best in North Yorkshire) and ensure Ofsted standards are maintained.
  • Pupil numbers - Currently numbers in KS1 are low and this needs to be addressed. There is an unbalanced ratio of boys to girls. Attracting new pupils from the catchment area and beyond, particularly Early Years, will be a priority.
  • Build relationships – with new parents, the community and the local cluster.
  • Flexible timetabling for a diverse and imaginative curriculum – looking to the future, we would like to further develop and extend our Forest School, attract other schools to use our facilities, and build on musical and artistic achievements.

About living and working in North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire is England's largest county and one of the most rural. The area comprises the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors, three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Pennines and a stunning coastline around Scarborough and Whitby. There are a wide range of shopping, leisure and cultural facilities as well as excellent schools, universities, road and rail links, there really is everything to offer you and your family as a place to work, live and enjoy.
