Job overview

Newstead Wood is a long established, highly selective girls’ state secondary school, with a co-educational Sixth Form. The school is located close to Orpington Station, with direct links to London.

Our catchment radius covers a wide range of socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds: over 40% of students are from ethnic minorities and many of our students will be the first of their families to enter Higher Education. The school is heavily over-subscribed.

Newstead prides itself on providing an exciting learning environment, both in terms of resources and expectations, so that each individual can flourish. We recognise and respond to the range of students’ abilities, both in terms of specific subjects and personal and social education. Newstead is nationally and internationally renowned for offering the best ways to provide for the needs of very able students, both through the formal curriculum and by links with the wider community.

The students and staff have always recognised the benefits of a strong extra-curricular programme; this is evidenced through a variety of drama and musical events. Sport, foreign exchange visits, lunchtime clubs (e.g. debating society) are equally prevalent. The annual Enrichment Week, in which the timetable is suspended so that students can explore topics in depth and across the curriculum, is testament to this philosophy.

Every adult in the school is a leader. In every word, tone and gesture; they set both direction and expectation. We expect every adult to take responsibility and the initiative to do what is right for the children. Our expert and dedicated staff inspire our students; and our students' energy, creativity and enthusiasm inspire staff.

We know that lively minds come to us well stocked and able to think in a divergent manner. We have high expectations and encourage students to be self-motivated so that learning arises naturally through enquiry and research. We are proud of our students' achievements - whatever field they excel in.

Our staff understands very able and gifted students and encourage the appreciation and acceptance of different abilities.

However, neither staff nor students are complacent - constantly looking for new challenges to meet and fresh problems to solve. We know our students as individuals and support them to grow as thinking young people and active citizens, ready to take positions of responsibility and leadership on leaving school.

With the current Head retiring, we are now looking for a leader who can build on Newstead Wood’s excellent reputation and further improve an already excellent school. If you feel you are able to support us to bring out the best in our pupils, we welcome your application for this position.

United Learning

Newstead Wood School is part of United Learning, a large, and growing, group of schools aiming to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England.

Our schools work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could. Our subject specialists, our Group-wide intranet, our own curriculum and our online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resource, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance.

As a Group, we can reward our staff better: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed. We invest in our staff wellbeing. Our academies each have at least eight INSET days per year (with three of those solely dedicated to planning), and an ongoing group-wide wellbeing programme. It's an ethos we call ‘the best in everyone’.
