Job overview

Inspiring curious minds and responsible citizens.

The Role

As Headteacher of West Oxford Community Primary School you will work with governors and staff to deliver excellence in education.

You will lead by example the professional conduct and practice of our enthusiastic and committed teaching and support staff in a way that minimises unnecessary workload and prioritises continuous professional development.

You will drive the design and delivery of an inspiring and comprehensive curriculum, harnessing the rich resources of our community and city; building on our school’s strengths in music, art and sports; and improving outcomes for all children.

You will steer our school through challenging financial times – informing tough decisions around funding priorities, thinking creatively around how to optimise staff deployment and working in partnership with parents and governors to raise additional funds for the school.

Finally, you will combine confident and empathetic leadership with a sense of fun, a passion for learning and an ability to inspire.

The School

Situated in a riverside suburb of the historic city of Oxford, West Oxford Community Primary School is a diverse and welcoming school at the centre of an engaged local community. Our 200+ children speak more than 23 languages, span the full range of abilities and enrich school life from a diversity of cultural backgrounds.

Our school has easy access to Oxford’s rich cultural and natural resources. Our children regularly visit the city’s world class university museums which lie within walking distance of the school. Our school is bounded by rivers and nature reserves creating plentiful opportunities for outdoor learning.

An ethos of responsibility permeates across our school community. Our 2018 ‘Good’ Ofsted report noted the respectful behaviour of our students towards each other and our teachers. They also commented on how well parents and governors support both their children and the school. West Oxford Primary School children are curious, open minded and enjoy coming to school.

We have a strong environmental ethos, generating power from solar panels, encouraging walking or biking to school and cooking healthy meals from scratch in our school’s kitchens.

We have particular strengths in music and art with a focus on equity of opportunity. All children are given the chance to learn an instrument during their time at our school. Children regularly participate in community competitions like Young Art Oxford.

Nevertheless, we have our challenges. Our early years and KS1 teaching provide our children with a strong foundation for learning. Performance  in writing is more variable where we are making progress, but continue to have room to improve.

We continue to strengthen communications with parents to build their confidence and trust in the leadership of the school.

We are seeking an energetic and empathetic leader who can harness the unique resources of our community and city to deliver an excellent education for our children.
