Job overview

Reach South Academy Trust is seeking an Inspirational Headteacher for one of its Primary Schools in Plymouth to start on 1 January 2019, due to the retirement of the current postholder.

We are looking for a Head Teacher with energy, passion and resilience to build on a culture of high expectations, achieving the best outcomes for all students.

The School: Goosewell is a large primary school on the outskirts of Plymouth. There are 625 pupils arranged in 21 classes, from Foundation Stage to Year 6.  Goosewell joined Reach South Academy Trust on January 1st 2017 having received two successive Ofsted Requires Improvement ratings but is now on an upward trajectory to ‘Good’.

Goosewell is now beginning to build a well-deserved reputation for delivering high quality learning opportunities for its pupils and career opportunities for its staff.  This is a school that is at the heart of its community. At Goosewell, everyone is welcomed. They are proud of their friendly, caring school where they respect and value each other. At Goosewell, they want all their children to develop a love of learning. To achieve this, they provide a lively, broad, balanced and caring education through a range of exciting and relevant and learning opportunities within and beyond the school environment.

Background: Reach South is a new and dynamic charitable education Trust based in the South West. First established in Plymouth with eight founding primary academies; these were subsequently joined in November 2017 by its first Special Academy, based in Wiltshire, and then very recently, by two further primary academies in Bournemouth during March this year.

Reach South is a part of the REACH family of MATs. The founding Trust, REAch2 Academy Trust, was launched by its founder Sir Steve Lancashire in 2012 and now operates 55 primary academies across the Midlands and South East of England. Reach South operates across the South West of England with the aim of delivering all through 3-19 education.

We are building this Trust on a clear set of values, behaviours and curriculum principles. At the heart of those values and principles is a belief in our young people and a determination to support them to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to become the successful citizens for today and all of their tomorrows. Our vision is to enable individual academies to flourish with real autonomy, whilst also ensuring a strong ethos of support and collaboration across our schools.

Our core business is delivering exceptional education for children and young people with a mission to help all pupils aspire to achieve beyond the expectations that others put on them. We do this through the development of a talented and committed work force. In order to deliver exceptional opportunities for learning, we need highly motivated staff across the all parts of the organisation. Therefore, we are looking for an outstanding individual to help support the Trust centrally with its day to day activities and planning for the exciting developments that lay ahead.

Contact and Process: If you are a Head Teacher who is talented, dynamic, enthusiastic and creative – we would be delighted to hear from you!

Visits to the school are both encouraged and welcomed. Please call the school office (01752 482960) or email admin@goosewell.plymouth.sch.uk

To arrange an informal discussion about the role, please contact Sarah Findlay-Cobb,  Regional Director of Education on 07392 866263 or email: sarah.cobb@reachsouth.org or Maria Manning,  Chair of Governors at  mmanning@goosewell.plymouth.sch.uk

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Each post is subject to an enhanced DBS check.

Reach South Academy Trust has an Equal Opportunities Policy for selection and recruitment. Applicants are requested to complete and return the Equal Opportunities Monitoring form separately with their application.

At Goosewell Academy, all children are nurtured and encouraged to fulfil their potential by our committed and talented staff. We want all our pupils to be well-rounded and happy learners who are challenged so that they achieve their potential and are ready for the next stage in their lifelong journey of education. Alongside this, we promote an ethos of children and adults working together respectfully to create a safe and supportive environment that contributes to our community.

Goosewell Primary is a successful, highly regarded three-form entry primary academy with a PAN of 630. The Academy was inspected in December 2019 and received a Good rating: ‘Pupils thrive at Goosewell Primary Academy. They enjoy learning and making friends. Many pupils told inspectors that the school was very friendly and that pupils were kind and well behaved. Pupils learn about the importance of acting respectfully and with empathy for others throughout the curriculum.’

Reach South is a young and developing Trust which operates across the South West of England with the aim of delivering all through 3-19 education. We operate 14 academies in Plymouth, Bournemouth, Dorset and Wiltshire. We are building this Trust on a clear set of values, behaviours and curriculum principles. At the heart of those values and principles is a belief in our young people and a determination to support them to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to become the successful citizens for today and all of their tomorrows.

Our core business is delivering exceptional education for children and young people with a mission to help all pupils aspire to achieve beyond the expectations that others put on them. We do this through the development of a talented and committed workforce. In order to deliver exceptional opportunities for learning, we need highly motivated staff across all parts of the organisation.

Teachers within Reach South belong to a national community of professionals, and benefit from a wide range of networks and development opportunities across the Trust. In time, our best teachers are able to work across schools, develop specialisms and step up to leadership roles within and beyond their own academy. The Trust provides a strong culture of collaboration and support, together with high expectations for staff and pupils alike.

Those we recruit are able to demonstrate that they share our values, are highly motivated to work with colleagues, within and beyond their school, to continuously develop their skills and pursue professional excellence.
