Job overview

The Proprietors of Caversham Preparatory School invite applications for the post of headteacher. Ideally the new appointment would commence in September 2020, but we would consider a January 2021 start for the right candidate.

This is an opportunity for an engaging, enthusiastic and energetic person to lead this small, co-educational, family owned, independent school in Reading. You will be a Senior Manager who is ready to lead, or a current Head Teacher looking for a challenge to increase school numbers. Salary commensurate with experience plus performance related bonuses.

The school has excellent results, with all pupils gaining entry and to their first choice senior schools, with several winning scholarships. From the ISI Report, “The children make ‘Exceptional Progress’ with ‘Exceptional’ end of Key Stage Results. The children have ‘Excellent’ behaviour for learning.” Also, "The pupils' personal development is Excellent and they benefit from the high quality of pastoral care they receive".

Caversham Preparatory School opened in 1993 and has been owned by the Lawson family since 2008. Jacqueline Lawson was proprietor head before retiring in 2016, with her then deputy head taking over as headteacher.

You will be supported by the Lawson family who have "created a happy school based on family values, where children are safe and thrive within a warm and encouraging community" (ISI).

For a confidential discussion about the role, and an application pack, please contact:

Caversham Preparatory School is a family owned school, run by a family for families.

We are one of a few family-owned independent schools in the country and we aim to work with parents and pupils to provide a happy and stimulating environment in which all pupils can thrive; to create an environment in which all pupils’ potential is developed fully in all areas of personal, academic, physical, social, spiritual and moral development.

The ethos of the school is based on an “I can” positive culture, where children are taught that ‘with help’ they can aim high and succeed. We create a supportive environment in which each child's needs are recognised. We aim to foster an understanding of all faiths and cultures; respect for one another and the environment in which we all live. Emphasis is placed on encouraging self-knowledge and an understanding of what it means to contribute towards a strong, cohesive community.
