Job overview

Brookways School is a thriving, vibrant and ambitious independent specialist day school for pupils aged 7-16 with autism. The school opened in 2018 as part of the Kedleston Group and has worked hard to establish a strong ‘family’ feel. There are currently 38 on roll but early in 2021 a new building will be opened, on the existing site, which will provide the capacity to increase the roll to 80 and to extend the age range to 19. With the upcoming retirement of the Headteacher, the school is looking to appoint a new Headteacher to build on its many strengths and lead the next phase of its development.

The school provides a safe learning environment for pupils, all of whom have EHCPs, and are living with autism, mainly Asperger’s Syndrome and higher functioning autism, who also face other challenges such as ADHD, dyslexia and PDA. It was graded as Good at its last inspection.

The school is in a state-of-the-art learning environment and offers a calm, quiet, low arousal, safe, positive and nurturing place where young people can learn and grow. Its greatest strength is its talented and committed staff team who have established outstanding relationships with the pupils and who are completely focussed on equipping them to be independent adults who can lead fulfilling lives and to contribute positively to society.

The new Headteacher will provide the strategic and operational leadership that will harness the many existing strengths of the school, confidently building on current achievements, leading it into an even more successful future. There will also be a commitment to supporting your personal development and you will be part of a network of experienced colleagues who offer fantastic support through practical coaching and mentoring.

The new Headteacher must be resilient, innovative and lead by example to develop and deliver their vision for the highest standard of autism education provision. You will be an ardent advocate for the children and young people and experienced in working with children with SEN and leading, supporting and developing teams to succeed. You will be enthusiastic and sensitive, with the ability to keep calm in challenging situations in order to deliver the best possible outcomes for the Brookways team and the wider community.

You will be able to articulate an affinity and commitment to the school’s aims and values as well as have a demonstrable track record of outstanding teaching and learning and excellent leadership experience as a Headteacher, Deputy Head or similar.
