Do you want to work in a forward-looking, successful 11-18 Church of England High School & 6th Form College? An exciting opportunity has arisen to join this well-established Church of England 11-18 school, located in the centre of Wigan, which has long been held in high regard by the local community.

One of only two Wigan Schools with a Sixth Form, The Deanery has an enviable track record in school improvement and excellent links with both the local community and local churches. As a large Church school with over 1,300 pupils, we believe firmly in recognising and developing the God-given talents of all who work and learn here and provide significant opportunities for professional and career development.

Governors are looking to appoint a headteacher who:

  • Has a strong Christian faith and will uphold and sustain the spiritual and caring ethos of The Deanery.

  • Thinks strategically and can build a culture of continuous improvement to underpin school improvement.
  • Can take our school forward from ‘good’ to ‘outstanding’.
  • Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills and uses them to foster strong relationships across the whole school community.
  • Has a proven track record of raising achievement.
  • Is committed to building effective teams across the whole school community to drive improvement.
  • Has a proven track record of leading curriculum development to deliver rich and stimulating learning for pupils.

In return, we can offer:

  • A distinctive Christian ethos.
  • A vibrant, hardworking and committed staff.
  • Well-motivated pupils and supportive parents.
  • A £15 million new school building with state-of-the-art facilities.

Ofsted 2016:

  • The progress made by the majority of pupils currently in the school is improving strongly and rapidly. Their progress is now good.
  • Teaching is good. Teachers are knowledgeable about their subjects and most provide suitable stretch and challenge for pupils.
  • Pupils have positive attitudes to learning. They take pride in their work and behave well in lessons and at social times.

About The Deanery Church of England High School and Sixth Form College

Who are we?

A school with a church foundation has existed on this site for 89 years. In 1932, All Saints Senior Church School was founded for ‘the nurture of the hearts and minds of children’ in Wigan. In 1971, All Saints’ School closed to allow the formation of a new high school. For the last 51 years, The Deanery Church of England High School has honoured that rich legacy and has been a beacon of distinctive Christian education for generations.

Our school sits at the heart of Wigan and serves young people and families from every parish of the town.

o Our pupils and students are fantastic – they are highly motivated and engaged young people with supportive and caring parents.

o As a Church of England school, we aim to maintain a distinctly Christian ethos while being genuinely welcoming and inclusive.

o We have over 1450 pupils and students, including over 150 in our Sixth Form.

o The school admits 250 children into Year 7 each year, and is heavily oversubscribed.

o We offer a rich co-curricular provision, including music, drama and sport.

o Our school building was completed in September 2017 offering state of the art facilities.

o Our Sixth Form Centre gives us a modern area in which to work and study. It allows us to have a distinctive sixth form which is still closely linked to the main school.

o Our Sixth Form is one of the top performing colleges in Wigan for Value Added and above national averages.

What about our staff?

We have around 150 staff in total who are pivotal to our success.  The team is welcoming and friendly; we have a Staff Council who meet to discuss ideas about how we can support each other and make sure that our staff are well looked after.  We look to recruit people who have the right attitude and share our values.  If you have a love for teaching and are passionate about seeing children succeed, we can help you do the rest.  We can offer support, which focuses on the quality of teaching and learning, curriculum development and all aspects of Leadership and Management.

Where are we?

Wigan is conveniently located between Manchester and Liverpool, both cities being less than an hour’s drive away.  The town lies at the heart of the regional motorway network, which affords quick and easy access to the rest of the UK via an extensive road network. Its rail links are exceptional.  We are only a 30-minute drive away from Warrington, Bolton and Leigh.  The school itself is situated in the heart of Wigan town centre, directly opposite the bus station and only a 10-minute walk away from both main railway stations.
