Job overview
Headteacher - Rutlish School
We are seeking an exceptional Headteacher who has the skills and ambition to lead our eight-form entry school through the next stage of its development following our Ofsted judgement of Outstanding last year.
Standards are already high, but we believe this is a unique opportunity for an inspirational candidate to make a real difference at one of the country's largest and best boys only non-selective comprehensive schools.
Our new Headteacher will be committed to our 'no boy left behind' attitude, where every student is supported to excel across every area, from academic subjects to sport and the creative disciplines.
It is our ambition to win a National reputation for excellence for the education of boys under a continued diverse ability intake. We aspire to see our school build on its already high academic standards to retain its place locally as No 1 for achievement and value added.
Our new Headteacher will continue with our efforts to see our joint 6th form reach its full potential. Our students are culturally rich: 50% of our intake has English as an additional language, we have a large proportion of SEN K and pupil premium students, and significant and ever-increasing numbers of high-achievers, the majority of whom remain with us for their A-levels.
Rutlish is not a school that rests on its laurels. The behaviour of our boys was described by Ofsted inspectors as "impeccable", but good pupil discipline and achievement are not easily won or maintained. A new Headteacher will effectively promote highest standards of conduct among our pupils.
Candidates must be committed to advance equality and overcome disadvantage for all students, support staff in an ambitious programme of continuous professional development, provide leadership that continues to attract the best candidates for vacancies, and facilitate effective collaboration between colleagues across our two 6th form sites to ensure the highest standards.
We want a Headteacher who can demonstrate an ability to develop closer links with parents, the neighbourhood and local business community, in order to raise aspirations and create increased opportunities for our students. Our new leader will champion our boys and the school externally, as well as inspiring all pupils to show pride in their heritage and achievements.
We recognise the importance of mental and physical health and wellbeing across the Rutlish community and want to see these elements embedded in the curriculum in order to ensure staff and students are at all times supported to do and give their best.
Our new Headteacher will inspire loyalty among an existing experienced senior leadership team, know how to get the best out of accomplished and committed staff, and will be supported by a strong, stable Governing Body.
This is a chance to lead an already outstanding school on the next stage of its journey to become a beacon of excellence in academic achievement, pastoral care and community spirit.

Values and vision
Rutlish School aims to create an environment where boys and staff behave responsibly and contribute fully as they develop a clear sense of belonging to the school community. The secondary school is committed to educating the whole person and helping its pupils to understand the importance of responsibility, compassion, competition, fairness and honesty in all that they do.
Teaching students the skills of self-discipline, co-operation, respect and tolerance is seen as essential, as without these skills it is believed that academic objectives cannot be reached.
Ofsted report
“The boys are proud to be members of the school; they feel safe and their behaviour is considerate and courteous. Internal and external exclusions have fallen rapidly as a result of consistent policies and careful monitoring. The headteacher and senior leaders, including governors, have been successful in their relentless focus on improving teaching and raising achievement. Staff morale is high and parents and carers express confidence in the leadership and management of the school. The curriculum and students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development are strengths.”
