Job overview

Opening in September 2023, Oak Tree School will cater for 150 children from Year 1 to Year 13 with complex needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder and associated complex needs. Our mission is to recognise each and every one of our pupils as individuals, and to nurture their potential, developing the whole child by challenging and supporting them, intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically.

Maiden Erlegh Trust has a track record of running high achieving, inclusive and vibrant schools. Oak Tree School will be no exception.

We are looking for someone who shares our ambition for the school, its pupils and its staff; and to lead the school into the opening phase and beyond. If you have the enthusiasm, experience and rigour to implement an ambitious academic and personal development curriculum then we would like to hear from you.

The Headteacher is expected to:

  • Lead and manage effectively, with integrity and humility, at all times.
  • Accountable for the quality of education, support and development of staff, and the overall experience of learners and staff in their school.
  • Provide the day-to-day direction and leadership consistent with the vision and ethos, integrity, excellence, and inclusiveness expected of all schools in the Trust.
  • Responsible for the operational management of the school, the safe supervision of all students and staff, and care of the school premises and equipment.
  • Collaborate positively with others in the Trust and model excellent leadership and practice at all times.
  • Embrace their shared responsibility for every child in the Trust, as well as those in their own school.

Although it is not possible to visit Oak Tree School as it is still under construction, we would urge you come and visit one of our other school sites to come and meet us.

Maiden Erlegh Trust is a proudly comprehensive and local community-based Trust. We believe in ambitious inclusion and that every child and young person can achieve great things. As a result, we have a range of schools because we want to be a Trust for local families, whatever their circumstances.

Because our Trust schools are geographically close, we know our communities and our local agencies very well. This supports strong collaboration, productive working relationships and access to genuine support and assistance (often not as readily available in larger trusts).

This is an extremely exciting time to be joining the SEND and Alternative Provision Hub within Maiden Erlegh Trust, working with extremely talented, driven, and inspirational colleagues.

We recognise the importance of investing in our staff, and you would be supported with tailored development opportunities, but we would also hope you would contribute to our CPD offer also (not least our annual cross-Trust conference).

If you would like further information about the role, please contact our HR department via email recruitment@maidenerleghtrust.org

Closing date: Sunday 2 October 2022.

Shortlisting: Monday 3 October 2022.

Interviews will take place: Wednesday 12 October 2022.

Applications received which are not completed using the form provided may not be considered at shortlisting.

Maiden Erlegh Trust is an Ethical Leadership Pathfinder organisation and we are committed to safeguarding, equality and promoting the welfare of children and young people. We are also committed to having the highest expectations of pupil/students and staff, and supporting everyone to reach their full potential. All employees of the school and Trust are expected to share these commitments. All posts require satisfactory employment checks and references and a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check. All Leadership roles will require a Section 128 check.

Oak Tree School is an exciting collaborative project which will provide a safe and happy learning environment for 150 learners from Year 1 to Year 13, with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) for Autism Spectrum Conditions and associated complex needs, including Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and/or Social, Emotional and Mental Health.

These children and young people have boundless potential so, at the heart of Oak Tree School’s provision, will be a rich and stimulating curriculum, specialist personal development education and targeted therapeutic programmes delivered by talented and specialist staff.

The impetus for this project has been a partnership between Brighter Futures for Children, Reading Borough Council and Wokingham Borough Council as part of their commitment to providing additional special school places for local children close to their own communities. We are proud to lead on this project on their behalf and should like to congratulate all those Trust colleagues and partners who contributed to the application and will be instrumental to making vision a reality.

Community, inclusion and respect are key Maiden Erlegh Trust values and they underpin our vision for Oak Tree School. As the project progresses, we will continue work with our partners and listen to parents and children to realise our vision. Only in this way can we meet the needs of every child and help each one to reach their potential.

Linked to our community values, the school will also offer a range of outreach programmes to support SEND pupils in mainstream schools.

We look forward to welcoming the parents and students of Oak Tree School into the Maiden Erlegh community.
