Job overview

Ysgol Comins Coch has been achieving excellence within a respectful, caring and inclusive environment for many years. The acting Headteacher, who has led the school for the past three years, now wishes to retire and the Governors wish to appoint a new Headteacher to lead the school in the next period of its development.

Comins Coch is a popular school with pupils drawn from Aberystwyth and the surrounding area. The school has around 170 pupils, a very effective team of teachers and support staff who help each and every child learn and develop their full potential, and is currently making significant improvements to its buildings and facilities. The Governors wish to appoint a Headteacher who can build upon existing strengths whilst being open to new ideas and ensuring that the school prepares its pupils for the changing world around them.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate relevant knowledge and experience of delivering teaching excellence; effective learning and pupil assessment; current and likely future developments in Welsh education; developing and managing high performing teams; professional development of staff; performance management; strategy development, implementation and evaluation; managing budgets; curriculum planning and resource allocation; and developing strong and supportive relationships with parents, Governors, the County Council, the local community and other bodies.

The successful candidate will have excellent communications skills, preferably in English and Welsh. Applications are invited from applicants who are not currently fluent in Welsh but who would commit to and successfully complete a programme of intensive learning before joining the school in September 2019.

In addition to these requirements, the school and its Governors attach particular importance to:

  • Having high expectations of pupils, staff and themselves, in relation to all aspects of their development, including academic excellence
  • Providing a clear vision for the future of the school which inspires staff, parents and pupils alike, with clear plans about how to deliver it
  • Offering energetic, positive leadership which draws upon and reinforces the expertise of other staff
  • Providing a caring, respectful and inclusive environment in which all children and staff enjoy coming to school
  • Ensuring that the school helps all children to develop their ability to learn independently and to be prepared for the world outside school
  • Openness to new ideas and expertise from both within the school and outside, and experience of managing change

The closing date for applications is 17 March 2019 and interviews will be conducted on 4 April 2019.
