Part of the Aurora Group, Aurora Poppyfield School in Effingham, Surrey opened in February 2022, they provide day placements for students aged 11-16 years old with Autism and associated behavioural and communication difficulties.

We are looking for a Higher Level SEN Teaching Assistant to join our expanding team, to be a part of this exciting new experience right from the start

The Role

The purpose of the Higher Level Teaching Assistant is to support the Class Teacher with all elements of the day to day running of the class and to teach whole classes, groups and individual lessons in consultation with the Class Teacher on a regular basis across a range of classes.

Key duties  

  • Monitor pupils conduct and behaviour throughout the learning process and intervene to resolve highly complex, difficult or very challenging issues and keep records of incidents, health and behaviour etc. as necessary.  
  • Promote pupils’ cognitive, social, emotional, behavioural, physical development and spiritual well-being through a whole Waking Day curriculum.  
  • Work with pupils on therapy or care programmes, designed and supervised by a therapist/ care professional.  
  • Assist the Class Teacher’s with carrying out the professional duties of a teacher as outline in the Professional Standards for Teachers.  
  • Know and understand the Class Teacher’s curriculum planning and to plan, prepare and deliver assigned programmes of teaching and learning activities to individual, small groups and/or classes modifying and adapting activities as necessary within agreed systems of supervision.  
  • To provide high quality, challenging and differentiated educational activities and experiences through teaching a broad and balanced curriculum aiming at pupils achieving their full potential in all areas of learning.  
  • Support the day to day running of classes across the school and take the lead in the absence of a Class teacher.  
  • Select and adapt appropriate resources/methods to facilitate agreed learning activities  
  • Reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.  
  • Take an active role in key areas of responsibility across the school including displays and organising resource.  
  • Develop and implement individual plans for pupils (such as the educational elements in an EHCP), including attendance at, and contribution to, reviews if requested.  
  • Contribute to the community life of the school by taking an active part in the preparation and celebration of both community and multi-cultural events.

 Respond to the varying and changing needs of the school and undertake duties and tasks to the highest ability in order to achieve the smooth running of the school. Your duties are likely to vary and therefore candidates will need to be flexible and be able to lend a hand whenever required.

Skills and Qualifications  

  •  Experience working with SEN in an employed or voluntary setting   
  • The Higher Level Teaching Assistant Diploma or equivalent Level 4 qualification, or demonstrate equivalent skill level.  
  • GCSE pass above C (or 4 in the new GCSE system) in English and Maths  
  • Full UK driving licence and access to your own car desirable   
  • Relevant knowledge and experience of pupils with SEN, SLD/PMLD, ADHD and ASD  
  • Understanding of the Safeguarding principles and Child Protection procedures  
  • Experience of managing a range of approaches to behaviour, including managing behaviours that challenge.  
  • Experience working within education is advantageous
