The Aurora Group

Be a part of something new! Opening in early 2022, The Aurora Poppyfield School is an innovative new provider for 11-16 year old pupils with Special Educational Needs. We have taken a mixed academic approach to create an environment where young people can achieve their own goals and thrive - be that with GSCEs or a vocational route.

We are currently seeking to recruit a Higher Level Teaching Assistant to join our team of professionals in the rewarding task of shaping this exciting new provision, right from the very start.

The purpose of the Higher Level Teaching Assistant is to support the Class Teacher with all elements of the day to day running of the class and to teach whole classes, groups and individual lessons in consultation with the Class Teacher on a regular basis across a range of classes.

The role / key duties

As our Higher Level Teaching Assistant; your role will be to assist in providing high quality, challenging and differentiated educational activities and sensory experiences through the teaching of a broad and balanced curriculum to a small classroom of ASD and SEMH students, aged 11-16, to enable them to achieve their full potential in all areas of learning.

To facilitate this, you’ll be expected to know and understand the Class Teacher’s curriculum planning and to plan, prepare and deliver assigned programmes of teaching and learning activities to individual, small groups and/or classes modifying and adapting activities as necessary within agreed systems of supervision.

Additionally you’ll support the day to day running of classes across the school and take the lead in the absence of a Class teacher, and assess, record and report on development, progress and attainment.

Naturally, you will take responsibility for ensuring a high standard of personal care for the pupils, carefully monitoring the health and well-being of the pupils informing the care staff, medical staff and any other relevant professionals of any concerns.

Like many SEN environments; your duties are likely to vary and therefore candidates will need to be flexible and be able to lend a hand whenever required.

Successful candidate qualities:

• The Higher Level Teaching Assistant Diploma or equivalent Level 4 qualification is required

• GCSE pass above C (or 4 in the new GCSE system) in English and Maths

• Relevant knowledge and experience of pupils with SEN, SLD/PMLD, ADHD and ASD

• Understanding of the Safeguarding principles and Child Protection procedures

• Experience of managing a range of approaches to behaviour, including managing behaviours that challenge.

Benefits and additional information

• Able to work within the parameters of the physical demands of the job role.

• Full training and continued support

• Life assurance and pension

• Health cash back plan

• Car lease scheme

• Bike to work scheme

• Perk box

Successful applicants will be subject to pre-employment safeguarding checks including an enhanced disclosure and barring service (DBS) check.

The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the Aurora Group is therefore permitted to ask job applicants to declare all convictions and cautions (including those which are "spent" unless they are "protected" under the DBS filtering rules) in order to assess their suitability to work with children."

The Aurora Group is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the children and young adults in our care and is a disability confident and equal opportunities employer
