Job overview

A family based in Morocco is looking for an exceptional full-time tutor for their three daughters aged sixteen, twelve and six.

The children currently attend a US curriculum school in Tangier, Morocco, having previously attended a British International school in Portugal. While there is a strong emphasis on the Humanities at their current school, the family feel the focus given to the STEM subjects is lacking and are looking to supplement this with private tuition.

The eldest daughter, aged sixteen, is highly intelligent and pragmatic, with a friendly and easygoing personality. She is motivated in her studies and respectful towards her teachers. With a natural tact and maturity beyond her years, she is eager to learn and is already considering her options for her university education, which may involve applying to universities in the UK. With an avid curiosity in how the world works, she has a strong interest in Economics, Political Science, Debating and International Relations. Whilst she achieves top grades in both Sciences and Humanities subjects, she has struggled of late with some Mathematics material and will next year be embarking on a new subject, Computer Science with which she may require assistance. Outside of school, she likes to read, draw and play volleyball and tennis, although due to an intensive preparation for her end of year exams last year, she has not had as much time to pursue these extracurricular hobbies as of late, which she is keen to rectify moving forward.

The twelve year old daughter is also highly intelligent, with an active mind and a joyful personality. Although she very much enjoys being taught by her father, she does not always have the same motivation in her studies as her older sister and requires a strong rapport with a teacher to be able to get the most out of lessons. She is gifted in Mathematics and with her natural intelligence has routinely finished top of her class in a range of subjects. Recently, however, she has become somewhat frustrated in her studies, occasionally finding the lesson structure at her school to be rigid, uninspiring, and not sufficiently challenging, and so reigniting her enthusiasm for learning will be a key part of the successful candidate’s role. She has a passion for the Sciences, having recently become fascinated by the foundational topics that underpin them such as Space and Time. She combines this with an affinity for the arts, especially drama, music and literature, and thoroughly enjoys reading both fiction and non-fiction. Outside of school, she enjoys playing tennis and football, and is an avid writer, currently working on a fantasy novel as well as her own poetry.

As with her older sisters, the youngest daughter has shown signs of academic potential, but she is yet to find a deep interest in her studies. She can be prone to hyperactivity, and in general seeks to complete her schoolwork in the shortest time possible, so that she can continue playing.

All the children lead a healthy and active lifestyle and enjoy practising a number of sports, including swimming, ballet, tennis and football to name a few.

The family is loving, warm and easygoing, and the tutor would be welcomed into their extended family, joining them for the family lunch on Saturdays if they wish to do so.

ROLE OF THE TUTOR

The tutor should inspire the children, and help to discover a vision of their future by exploring their passions, developing their interests and widening their knowledge.

Lessons will take place after school during the week, approximately from 16:30 to 23:00 and on Sunday evenings, managing the timetable of tutorials for the three students around their other commitments.

With the eldest daughter the tutor will help her define and navigate her academic pathway to university. This will include helping her determine which course she applies to, as well as the country of study. Helping her to develop in Mathematics is a priority, as well as guiding her as she begins her studies in Computer Science. On top of her schoolwork, she will be studying APs in Macroeconomics, French, English, Psychology, Art, Human Geography, and Comparative Government, so experience teaching these subjects is desirable. With the combination of her school, the additional APs she is taking, and working towards her future studies at university, helping her with structuring her time will be an important part of the tutor’s role, and ensuring that she is on track to receive the necessary qualifications to achieve her academic goals.

With the twelve year old daughter, attention should be given to building a strong rapport from the start and renewing her enthusiasm for study. As with the eldest daughter, the tutor should be a supportive and nurturing presence, guiding her through secondary education, and helping her to visualise her future and achieve her aspirations. Whilst gifted with her intelligence, she has room to improve with her organisation and she can struggle with motivation when she does not like or is not fully engaged with her tutor.

The six year old will need additional help growing into a full-time school environment, settling into a pattern of schoolwork and additional tutorials. Care should be taken to keep the lessons light and enjoyable, using games and activities where possible. The tutor will also be required to assist the youngest daughter with Humanities subjects, in addition to Maths and Science.

The tutor will remain in direct communication with the school to make sure the students are keeping up with their school studies, moving beyond them where possible, especially in the Sciences, Mathematics and other STEM subjects in which the students develop a passion.

The tutor is encouraged to embark on extended extracurricular projects which excite the students and foster curiosity, critical thinking and practical learning. These projects should be designed in collaboration with each student to find an area they enjoy exploring but some examples include learning film making in order to make a film or documentary, developing a computer game to learn coding, using a telescope to learn about astrophysics and the universe, or a Sports Science project to learn about how the scientific method is used in real world applications.

Lessons should be prepared outside of working hours, and the tutor will be expected to prepare a weekly report for each student for the parents to see.

The family travels frequently, both in Europe and Asia, and often make trips to Portugal in particular. On some of these trips, the tutor will be required to travel with them. On occasion, the tutor will also be required to deliver online lessons if the family travels without the tutor. It is likely that for the next two years, the family will be based in Morocco, however, if they do move again, the tutor will be expected to move with them.

The role has an initial contract of 24 months, however, it is the family’s wish that if the placement is successful, the tutor will stay well beyond this period of time, possibly up to six years or more.

DESIRED TUTOR PROFILE

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished teacher or tutor with an exemplary academic record, experienced at working with children of all ages, with a passion for inspiring children and helping them to develop and work towards their aspirations. In addition, a good understanding of both British and American educational systems is desirable.

Teaching Mathematics to age eighteen is an essential requirement for the position, as well as at least two of the following subjects up to age sixteen: Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, and Economics. Experience teaching the Social Sciences is desirable although not a prerequisite for the role. In those subjects in which the tutor is less experienced, they will also be expected to bring themselves up to the required standard in order to teach the students. Knowledge of French and Arabic would be beneficial but not essential.

Since the tuition will largely take place after school, an engaging and inventive manner is essential, as well as being able to discover how each child thinks and learns, tailoring the tuition, style and format of learning specifically for each student to maximise their learning and motivation during the lessons. There should be an emphasis on bringing the subjects to life to make them relevant and enjoyable, and developing a love of learning in the students.

The tutor must be highly organised, capable of planning and executing various plans of study simultaneously. They should be a good role model, be a non-smoker and lead a healthy and active lifestyle. The ideal candidate will have the compassion, warmth and dedication to become invested in the girls’ futures, nurturing them to flourish in their studies and develop their interests beyond the school curriculum.
