Big Creative Training (BCT) job specification (HR manager)

Big Creative Training is a well-established and expanding creative industry training provider with a long track record of delivering positive outcomes for learners. Our mission is to improve the lives of young people through high quality training and creative industry experiences. We have more than 400 young people per year going through our vocational training programmes including apprenticeships, and they all take qualifications in maths and English. We have great industry links and work with over 100 creative sector employers and SMEs. 


We are looking for an outstanding HR manager to join our team based in Walthamstow, East London. The successful candidate will have maths and English at GCSE grade “C/4” or above, will be educated to degree level in a relevant area, and will have evidence of outstanding practice working as an HR manager.


Key tasks

• Work in a way that promotes the safety and wellbeing of colleagues and young people

• Manage the staff recruitment and induction process

• Submit childcare voucher, pension and Healthshield starters and leavers monthly 

• Maintain staff HR files and SCR to ensure they are up to date including CPD and training records

• Set up systems to track and maintain records of staff holidays, sickness and absence

• Administrate the appraisal process and maintain central record of all appraisals 

• Keep the staff contact list up to date

• Implement a staff page on the website and keep up to date

• Review and update company policies and procedures – ongoing where needed but mostly on a two-year cycle

• Prepare staff data for internal reports, Ofsted and external audits 

• Manage and administrate grievance and discipline processes including completing file notes for warnings etc.

• Manage and record updates to staff contracts and terms 

• First point of contact for staff HR matters

• Provide high level advice and strategic HR support to directors and managers

• Stay current with all relevant legislation and development in HR to ensure the organisation is at the forefront of best practice in this area

• Annual update of staff files to ensure contact details and next of kin information is up to date

• Check that subcontractor SCRs are up to date and that subcontractors follow our safer recruitment policy 

• Ensure job descriptions are updated annually in line with business needs, and shared with staff


Desired qualities

• CIPD qualified with active Associate or Chartered membership (essential)

• Experience of working at a management level in a similar role

• Demonstrable experience of advising on HR related issues with a strong team working, relationship building and customer focus ethic

• Experience of working in public sector HR (desired but not essential)

• Experience of working in the creative industries, or with a creative background (desired but not essential)

• Warm and engaging communication style with the ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner and maintain confidentiality

• Confident in management of employee relations cases with ability to recognise key risks and provide commercial, risk-based advice to line managers and ensure complete and accurate tracking takes place

• Proven ability to prioritise conflicting priorities, exercise sound judgement, anticipate issues, create innovative solutions and respond quickly to emerging people matters

• Strong written communication skills and the ability to develop clear policies and guidance documents

• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail

• Interest in and commitment to advancing the organisational equality and inclusion agenda

• Ability to empathise with and understand the many challenges faced by young adults in a demographic with high free school meals rate and poverty levels, many of whom struggled to succeed at school

• Display warmth, empathy, care, and sensitivity 

• Extremely organised and able to manage own work load effectively and flexibly

• Highly motivated and driven to succeed in a rewarding environment

• Outstanding communication skills 

• Positive, solution focused and proactive when managing and responding to data 

• Committed and willing to “go the extra mile” to meet targets

• Ambitious - will not settle for less than outstanding standards of work and behaviour

• Experience of working in education HR (desired but not essential)

• Experience of working in the creative industries, or with a creative background (desired but not essential)

Salary and days of work

• This is a part time 17.5 hours per week position paid at £20-21Kper annum (equivalent to £40-42k full time). Work days are Tue PM, Thu and Fri

o £40k for 1-2 years experience in a management position

o £41k for 2-3 years experience in a management position

o £42k for 3+ years experience in a management position

• We offer 22 days holiday plus bank holidays (11 days - prorated for part-time)

• Start date as soon as possible, but for an exceptional candidate who has a longer notice period we can start when you’re available

• This is a fixed term 18 month contract initially but is likely to extend

Welcome to Big Creative Training (BCT). We opened in 1999 to offer courses to disadvantaged young people and those not engaged in education, and while this is still at the very heart of what we do, we now provide courses to learners from all backgrounds and at all levels. We offer access to opportunities in the creative and cultural industries such as games design, media, music production and performance, and performing arts.
