Humanities and Economics Teacher

Michaela Community School is an exciting and successful free school that opened in September 2014 and is rated Outstanding by Ofsted. Our Progress 8 is 5th in the country, and our GCSE results are exceptional (e.g. 27% of students achieved a grade 9 in maths). The ambition of our vibrant and energetic team is to transform the lives of all children, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of us are Teach First Ambassadors. Some of us are not. We have some of the best GCSE results in the country with over half of our exams graded 7 or above. We opened our highly academic Sixth Form in 2019 and our intention is for most of our students to go to a Russell Group university.

We are looking for a Humanities and Economics Teacher with exceptional subject knowledge, either through their degree (e.g. Economics, PPE or E&M) or through tutoring/teaching Economics A-level in the past. Economics has been one of the most popular subjects in the sixth form, with almost half of pupils taking it; it is an exciting time to join a small and growing department. Students have been competing in the Student Investor Challenge and we are ready to expand the extra-curricular offer. There will be the opportunity to work with students on Oxbridge and Russell Group admissions, should this be something you can offer.

We teach a mastery curriculum, covering fewer topics each year, and doing so in real depth. The expectation is that Humanities teachers at Michaela will teach all 3 Humanities subjects to Years 7 and 8, but remember, with the resourcing and the bulk of planning done for you, this isn’t difficult. In History, we teach a chronological curriculum starting with the fall of the Roman Empire, going right up to the present day. In Geography, we ensure that pupils have a thorough mastery of British, European and world place before learning about geographical processes. And in Religion and Philosophy, our pupils encounter the most famous stories in the Bible before proceeding to the philosophy of religion, ethics and world religions.

We are looking for someone with a lot of personality, someone who wants to own their classroom and have vibrant and authentic relationships with their students. We want teachers who are conscientious, enjoy being with teenagers, and love to see students’ success. Our students work hard in lessons and at home, driven by their teachers’ ambitious expectations of them. Our excellent behaviour systems allow teachers to be themselves, and be as innovative as they like. The economics department is open-minded and rigorous, always looking for ways to improve.
