Based in the west of Edinburgh, The Royal High School is one of the oldest schools in Scotland, and has a strong sense of history, but prides itself on being very much a school of the 21st Century. It is a non-denominational 6 year comprehensive, with pupils drawn from 4 catchment primary schools: Blackhall, Clermiston, Cramond and Davidson's Mains. A significant number of placing requests are received each session. Year groups are capped at 220, and the school roll is 1250 for session 2016 - 17.
The school was the subject of a HMIE inspection in 2007, and local authority follow-through visits in March 2009 and May 2010.
The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) comprises the Rector, three Depute Rectors and Business Manager.
The current teaching staff complement is 89.2 FTE with 20.1 FTE staff other than teachers.
The school was refurbished in 2004, and enjoys a high standard of accommodation. The facilities are used extensively outside normal school hours, and the school has recently been designated a Community Sports Hub.ICT facilities are very good, and are in the process of being upgraded. All staff and pupils in S4/5/6 use Ipads for teaching and learning.

The Royal High School is a co-educational, non-denominational secondary in Edinburgh, Scotland. The school is one of the oldest in the nation, founded as a seminary of Holyrood Abbey in 1128. School uniform is in black and white, the same colours as the city of Edinburgh itself. The Royal High School is located less than two miles from the shoreline, and has been in its current location since 1968. The school motto translates from Latin as ‘The State Flourishes with the Muses’. The Royal High Primary School is no longer affiliated with the High School. Among the many famous figures to have studied at the school is Sir Walter Scott, the author of Ivanhoe and many classic works.

“Overall, the quality of pupils’ learning was good. In most subject areas, pupils were well motivated and enthusiastic about their learning. Most focused well on their tasks throughout lessons and responded very positively to the opportunities offered to work collaboratively. In a number of subjects good emphasis was given to creativity and independent learning and to debate and discussion.”
