Job overview

Following the promotion of the current Deputy Headteacher to Interim Principal of La Mare de Carteret High School, we are looking to appoint from September 2020 an Acting Deputy Headteacher. The principal areas of responsibility will be determined on appointment, span the 11-16 age range, reflect the experience and expertise of the person appointed and complement the current membership of the Senior Leadership Team.  This is an excellent opportunity for a suitably qualified, experienced and committed graduate teacher, with proven leadership and management experience, to make a significant contribution to the whole school community.  It is expected that the person appointed will have a clear knowledge of current educational developments and a firm understanding of the strategies and systems which promote successful learning. 

The successful candidate will possess proven skills in leadership, have the ability to analyse and evaluate evidence, and formulate solutions and ideas effectively. They will be a creative and dynamic leader, a strong communicator and have the ability to inspire trust and confidence across the whole school community. As a team member and senior leader the person appointed will be cooperative and constructive, have patience, tact and discretion, a commitment to equality of opportunity and will value diversity.

The post holder will lead on specific areas within the school and more widely across the Federation as well as having specific line managerial responsibility for some senior and middle leaders. Areas of responsibility will be discussed and agreed with the Interim Principal.

The Bailiwick of Guernsey is made up of four islands: Guernsey, Herm, Sark and Alderney.

Education in Guernsey comprises of 11 primary schools, four secondary schools, and three special schools which offer education to the Island’s young people who require additional support.

There is a primary and secondary school in Alderney (St Anne’s) and a primary school in Herm, which currently has 10 pupils. There is also a primary and secondary school in Sark, but the States of Guernsey does not have responsibility for this. In addition there are three private schools in Guernsey - Elizabeth College, Ladies College and Blanchelande College - which offer both primary and secondary education.
