Job overview

Do you want to make a difference?

The Harpur Trust has been inspiring and supporting the people of Bedford to help them improve their lives for over 450 years.  We want everyone to have pride in our community and realise their own potential.  We support and promote education, run four independent schools, sponsor the HEART Multi Academy Trust, give grants to local community projects, make social investments and look after older people in specialist accommodation.

This is an exciting, dynamic role to champion and develop the Trust’s education activities. Providing support to the Director of Community Programmes, you will forge relationships with schools in Bedford Borough and in particular work on a programme to counter education inequalities exacerbated by Covid 19.

Your work within the Trust’s own Independent Schools will enable them to build on their work within the community and coordinate safeguarding arrangements, policy development and professional development working groups across the Trust.

You will have experience working in the education sector, as well as being able to demonstrate your ability to develop and successfully sustain relationships with internal and external stakeholders at a senior leadership level.  You will also have a strong understanding of safeguarding issues in relation to KCSIE.

The role is for approximately 25 hours per week on a flexible basis.  The Trust offers excellent benefits, which include a generous pension scheme, life insurance, health care cash plan and hospital surgical treatment insurance.

As an organisation we have a big responsibility; we’re here to inspire and develop the next generation and we’re here to support our town to be a positive place for everyone living and working here.

To do that, we need talented, professional, committed people with diverse voices, cultures and experience. We look for people who are passionate about what they do, and who care about improving the lives of others.

We pride ourselves on providing a positive culture for all staff and we celebrate diversity in our workforce, recognising the wealth of ideas and experience that a diverse workforce can bring.

With over 1100 staff working for us, we are the largest private employer in Bedford.  We run 4 excellent independent schools; Pilgrims Pre-preparatory School, Bedford School, Bedford Girls’ School and Bedford Modern School, which between them educate 3.500 children.  We also sponsor the HEART Academies Trust and have successfully engaged with over 90% of local state schools over the past 3 years through our projects and grantmaking.

As a placebased charity which has been supporting the community of Bedford for well over 450 years, we give over £1.5 million per year in grants to local voluntary organisations and charities for projects which relieve poverty, provide education, or create social recreation opportunities for those who may not traditionally access such opportunities.

So whether you are looking to work in one of our schools or in our small team at the charity office, joining our team means working for a people-focussed organisation which does great things in and for our community.

We are The Harpur Trust.  We are here for Bedford, and here for good.
