Reporting Line: Manager of Information Systems

Tenure: Permanent, full-time or part-time


Key Responsibilities:

  • To design, develop and test new sections of our existing Management Information System. This is a bespoke system which has been developed using Java Servlets along with a MySQL database back-end, Bootstrap CSS and jQuery.
  • To collaborate with members of staff (both teaching and educational support staff) to understand their requirements, research and develop appropriate solutions.
  • To produce clear and concise documentation.
  • To support the existing system in terms of fixing bugs or helping members of the School community (parents, pupils and staff) when problems arise.
  • To integrate our MIS with a number of third-party systems, liaising with external organizations to exchange data in a robust and secure way.
  • To carry out any such duties as may be reasonably requested.


The successful candidate will be likely to fit the following profile:

  • Good, relevant degree; alternatively we would welcome applicants due to graduate in the Summer of 2021
  • Evidence of previous Core Java development/training
  • Evidence of previous work using SQL (and preferably MySQL)
  • Evidence of previous work using third-party APIs
  • Previous experience with CSS, HTML and Javascript
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the technologies mentioned above, and the desire to continue to learn
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the UK education system desirable but not essential
  • High levels of organisational and self-management skills
  • Self-motivation
  • Ability to converse with a wide range of people to gather and interpret their requirements
  • Ability to work cooperatively within a team
  • Flexibility and openness to change
  • High levels of personal and professional integrity
  • Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality

Surbiton High School has approximately 1495 pupils aged between 4 and 18. Our Preparatory Schools are divided into the Girls’ Preparatory School and Boys’ Preparatory School, and the Senior School is girls only from age 11 upwards.
