Job overview

We seek to appoint an outstanding, fully qualified, enthusiastic and dedicated class teacher to join our team within the Prep School here at Shebbear College.

The post is for a full-time position, for an Upper Key Stage 2 teacher and is suitable for NQTs or experienced teachers.

Curriculum strengths and experience that will be looked favourably upon include:

  • Science
  • English

Shebbear College is a small (330 pupils from 3-18) co-educational independent day and boarding school set in 85 acres of North Devon countryside. The school benefits from the security and camaraderie of its membership of MIST (the Methodist Independent Schools Trust) and enjoys a sound financial base. Two major building projects – a new Sixth Form Centre and a new Music block have been recently completed.

Shebbear College Prep School is a very friendly and welcoming school, with an excellent reputation for pastoral care and where positive relationships between staff, pupils and their families are central to everything we do.

Staff work hard to ensure that the standard of teaching and learning that takes place in all classes is high and that it caters for a range of different learning styles; meeting the individual needs and abilities of every pupil. We are committed to developing the full potential of our pupils and will always look for ways to nurture their particular strengths and interests. We make comprehensive assessments of pupils, track their progress carefully, and any child that needs it, will receive a programme of additional support, whether they are falling below expected standards or if they are considered gifted in one or more aspects of the curriculum and need to be extended and challenged.

Employing specialist teachers in a number of subject areas, as we do within Shebbear College Prep School, means that a higher overall standard of teaching and learning is maintained throughout the school and that our pupils benefit from a greater range of teaching styles and approaches. There is an expectation therefore, that any candidate for this position will be willing to teach the subjects that they specialise in, to pupils across both Key Stages 1 and 2.

This appointment would suit a recent graduate or someone wishing to gain further teaching experience in this ambitious, but non-selective school. Full support will be given to ensure that NQTs successfully complete their induction process.

The successful candidate will have every opportunity to gain the wide experience and responsibility, both academically and pastorally, to enable them to move on to higher posts either at Shebbear or elsewhere. We would expect all candidates to participate with enthusiasm in the wider life of the School.

BENEFITS OF SERVICE

In addition to working in a small friendly school in a stunning rural location we will offer a competitive remuneration package which also includes:

  • Membership of the Teachers’ Pension contributory pension scheme
  • Free lunch and refreshments during term-time
  • Longer holidays than the maintained sector
  • Medical centre on site during term time
  • Free use of the School facilities such as gymnasium

About Shebbear College

Founded in 1841 and steeped in history, Shebbear College is a thriving day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 4 to 18. Our 85-acre campus is situated in the beautiful Devon countryside, close to Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks and the fantastic surfing beaches of the North Cornwall coast.

Life at Shebbear is busy, filled with academic purpose, co-curricular activity, creative discovery and outdoor adventure - we believe in a broad, extensive education where pupils excel in all areas of the curriculum. Our talented staff and ambitious pupils together form a happy, caring community that challenges, innovates and develops a love of learning.

Our smaller size means that our staff know all of our pupils individually, enabling each child to discover their own strengths and find the confidence to shine. Every pupil is different and our team of passionate and committed teachers will find their spark and discover what motivates them, meaning that each pupil can develop their potential and feel empowered to be the very best they can be - academically, socially and morally.

Shebbear pupils consistently achieve excellent A-level, BTEC and GCSE results year-on-year.  We are proud to be a non-selective school and we believe that our pupils succeed because they are happy at school. The mix of our pupil-centered curriculum, our dedicated teachers, the individual attention and the extensive range of co-curricular opportunities on offer are key factors in this success.

At Shebbear College you will find confident, courageous, compassionate, creative, curious and courteous pupils who will welcome you with open arms!
