Job overview

Sick of marking for hours every night? Want a SLT who visibly support staff? Want to teach pupils who behave superbly at all times?

Visit! You will be blown away.

Then you will be interested in our oversubscribed 4-11 school in Elstow, near Bedford, and just over 30 minutes from London. We are recruiting a Teacher of KS2. The exact year group is to be decided as this post is adding capacity to ensure our pupils get very high outcomes.  We welcome applications from those who want to move into KS2 from KS1 or KS3.

ASPIRATION, HONESTY, RESPECT

At Advantage Schools our values of aspiration, honesty and respect drive everything that we do and as a result our teachers enjoy impeccable behaviour in lessons and hardworking, highly motivated students. Elstow School is a genuinely comprehensive school that provides a knowledge-based education for students of all backgrounds. We teach an unashamedly academic curriculum consisting of the best that has been thought and said, and we want you to be a part of this.

KEY STAGE 2

Students are in traditional classes of a maximum of 30, and each teacher has their own class but teaches both either writing or mathematics.

Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups or pairs and lessons are planned to challenge the most able, with scaffolded support for other attainers who need it. Sport and music are supported by both the SSF, colleagues from the secondary school in the Trust, and by services from Bedford Borough as well as using experts within school. A full and rich curriculum is timetabled, including as a key point, the history, geography, science and visual arts teaching sequences from a coherent and relevant knowledge base.

READING

Developing our pupils as readers has been, and remains, a key priority for all staff. We have a 5 day sequence of reading for every year group across the school, from Y1 to 6. It meets the needs of teaching inference and introduces all our children to a wide range of genres (including classic fiction, challenging non-fiction and poetry of all types). It also allows teachers to hear every child read aloud most days, and helps them master unusual vocabulary and use it in their writing.  Teachers are being trained in the strategies outlined in the Doug Lemov book ‘Reading Reconsidered’ and our pupils expect to read out loud in each and every lesson. This is particularly valuable in the older years where they can fall out of the habit of reading aloud.

PARENTAL CHOICE

With waiting lists in each year group and results placing us amongst the top schools locally, we are a hugely popular school. Demand for places is very high as parents want the combination of a Elstow education and our high aspirations for their children.  We’re looking for people who want to be the best. You will be excellent in the classroom and an inspiring character who is willing to lead by example, but will also contribute positively to wider school life. Most of all, you will be clear that education is a great leveler and work hard to help us achieve our goal of preparing every student to go onto secondary school and further to university.

THE PHASE

We have a knowledge-based curriculum that consists of the most important things that pupils should know. You will be led by excellent leaders - our existing KS2 teachers and phase leaders are superb. Where possible, we teach as subject-specialists (currently maths and English) to improve the experience for all of our pupils.

SUPPORT AND DEVELOPMENT

Career development is a priority - there will be opportunities to work on whole school priorities and gain the experience required to progress into senior leadership in due course. Additionally, we offer financial assistance for relevant post graduate study and support for middle leaders wishing to apply to become Specialist Leaders of Education. We have partnerships with a number of local training providers, the Institute for Teaching, and with Inspiration Trust in Norfolk.

There are no unwieldy and impossible marking policies and Senior Leaders have a very high profile to ensure that you are supported to develop.

To arrange a tour or a confidential discussion about the position please contact Rosa Marotta on 01234 302300 or via email rmarotta@elstowschool.co.uk

To apply, please complete an Advantage Schools application form together with supporting letter outlining where you meet the person specification for the post.

Deadline: 9am, Monday 10 December 2018.

We are a school where teachers and students know each other and look out for each other. Safeguarding children enrolled at the school is of paramount importance, and we are fully committed to the protection and safe care of our students. The successful applicant will be required to undertake appropriate checks as well as providing proof of your right to work in the UK.   "
