Job overview

Key Stage Maths Coordinator

An able and inspiring teacher is required to lead Maths in the Junior School at Highgate from September 2019.

There are approximately 440 children in Key Stage 2 in five forms across four year groups.  Highgate is a fully coeducational, academically selective school with able and enthusiastic children.  Expectations are high across the curriculum and beyond.

Highgate embarked on a complete rebuild of the Junior School in January 2014.  The new state-of-the-art accommodation, opened in September 2016 provides us with an outstanding purpose-built teaching environment.  It is essential that we have the very best team of teachers in place in order to continue to make the most of this wonderful opportunity.

One of the most important statements in our Development Plan is ‘no glass ceilings’. This means we do not want any of our pupils leaving Year 6 believing they are ‘weak’ in any area of the curriculum. For this reason, we have no overt setting in maths or any subject in the Junior School. That said, it is vital that teaching and learning in maths and all subjects stretches and challenges the most able pupils as well as developing confidence in those who are less secure.

We have introduced aspects of Singapore Maths and the My Maths programme across Key Stage 2 and are currently building and developing teacher confidence and resources. The new Maths Coordinator will be expected to develop our practice and thinking in this area as well as considering other innovative approaches in the subject. A creative, flexible and collegiate approach is therefore essential.

We have close links with our Senior School Maths Department which shares the same underlying principles about teaching and learning as the Junior School. The successful candidate will be expected to meet regularly with the Senior School Head of Maths to ensure consistency and continuity in our approach.

Applications

Applications are sought from well-qualified teachers with relevant experience of the primary or the preparatory school curricula.  Candidates will need to be able to contribute to a challenging, accelerated curriculum and have experience of teaching intelligent, lively pupils or an interest in doing so, and the flair, imagination and people-skills to do so successfully.

The person appointed should be both able and willing to teach across the curriculum and across any of the four year groups as well as to be flexible in their approach. All staff are expected to contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school.

Teachers at Highgate enjoy a welcoming, comfortable and exceptionally well-resourced environment and are provided with significant assistance from a range of support staff.  Salaries are competitive.

About Highgate Junior School

Established in 1565, Highgate is a co-educational independent school, with around 1,800 pupils aged 4-18.

In 2020, Highgate was titled The Sunday Times London Independent School of the Decade by The Sunday Times Parent Power.

Highgate’s Junior School

Our Junior School has around 400 pupils aged 7-11 and is situated in a wonderful new building, opened in May 2017, and built to the highest specification.

Within the classroom

Our broad and creative curriculum is planned around specific learning objectives for every subject area, within each year group. We promote high levels of achievement and effort, so our pupils acquire the academic skills they need. However, we push the boundaries beyond a mere acquisition of knowledge: we want our pupils to develop the confidence to investigate and enquire, to solve problems, and to take responsibility for their learning.

We aim to enrich the learning experience of our pupils, broadening their social horizons and their cultural interests.

Beyond the classroom

Alongside their studies, Highgate pupils are offered a wide range of co-curricular activities which enhance both their childhood experience and their future aspirations. We are exceptionally fortunate when it comes to sport with extensive facilities including an indoor swimming pool, excellent staff and a wide range of activities available. We also encourage social responsibility through our charity work, both locally and further afield.

Junior School pupils attend a variety of clubs during lunchtime and after-school, while our Junior School Eco Council meets regularly to discuss activities and actions that support Highgate’s aim to be a sustainable school.

Across our Junior School, we continue to promote healthy and outdoor living, with a popular overnight camp-out in the grounds, plus a Year 6 residential trip to Wales during our Summer term during non-Covid times.

Location

Our School is situated in one of the most attractive and popular areas of North London, a short distance from central London and adjacent to Hampstead Heath. We endeavour to be a sustainable school and are well served by good public transport links.

Management

The day-to-day management of our Junior School is undertaken by our Principal, Mark James MA, who reports to our Head, Mr Adam Pettitt.
