About Heronsgate Primary School

ABOUT US

Heronsgate Primary School is a popular multicultural school and one of two lead schools in the Royal Greenwich School Alliance, with around 800 children on roll. We have two sites in South East London – West Thamesmead and Royal Arsenal in Woolwich.  We were graded 'Outstanding' by Ofsted (March 2019).

As of September 2021, our Thamesmead Campus has three classes in every year group from Reception through to Year 6, with two nursery classes (one morning and one afternoon session). Our Royal Arsenal Campus is a smaller site with one class in every year group from Reception to Year 6 and one nursery class (morning session).

The Royal Arsenal Campus is located in Burrage Grove near the Royal Arsenal development. Extensive regeneration is taking place in the area in anticipation of the arrival of Crossrail. Central London will then only be 18 minutes away. Both sites have good transport links with the DLR and mainline stations close by as well as many bus routes.

The Thamesmead Campus has a modern two storey four-classroom block which houses a library, music room, offices, sensory room and training facility.  The Royal Arsenal Campus has been extended to include the top floor of the building with extra classrooms, group spaces and a library. Children who come to Heronsgate attend only one of the sites, although staff plan and train together under the same leadership team.

OUR STAFF

We are very committed to sharing and devolving leadership. Career progression for our staff is a high priority and we provide a high quality CPD programme for staff as well as working closely with other local schools and within our partnership to share good practice.

Mr Stephen Harris is the Executive Headteacher and is responsible for the strategic direction of the whole school. Mrs Shahnaz Ahmed is Head of School at the Thamesmead campus and Mr Hafeez Khan at the Royal Arsenal campus. Heads of School perform the daily duties of the Headteacher. In the last few years, the school leadership team has been restructured and a middle leadership team has been created, spearheading the further raising of standards and ensuring our children receive a high-quality education.

OUR CHILDREN

At Heronsgate we are strongly committed to ensuring our children receive a very broad and creative curriculum which develops skills and is enriched by a wide variety of activities, experiences and trips. We believe this, accompanied by our ‘Heronsgate Charter’, enables children to be secondary ready and realise their potential.

ICT is embedded deeply into the life of the school, with all children in KS1 and KS2 assigned an iPad each and class sets shared in EYFS. We are very proud to be an Apple Regional Training Centre and Apple Distinguished School (one of only 41 in the UK/Ireland and 500 worldwide). We offer free courses for teachers over the year delivered by our Apple Distinguished Educator and Professional Learning Specialist.

In recent years, we have received several prestigious national awards:

  • Healthy Schools Gold Award – for our support in developing healthy lifestyles.
  • Naace ICT Mark – awarded three times consecutively in recognition of our use of technology to support teaching and learning across the school.
  • Artsmark- awarded Gold for our outstanding Arts Curriculum across the school.
  • Gold STARS award- for our work towards a safer, healthier school environment.
  • We are pleased to be an Apple Regional Training Centre (one of only 100 in the UK)
  • We are an Apple Distinguished School (one of only 41 in the UK/Ireland and 500 worldwide).
