Job overview

We are looking to appoint a suitably qualified excellent class teacher who is passionate about making children enjoy learning and gain in confidence.  The position would suit a new or experienced teacher with enthusiasm and drive and who would like to make a difference to our pupils with additional needs such as Dyslexia, ASD and Speech and Language difficulties. Our class sizes range from approximately four to ten. 

The position has the opportunity to study for Specialist Teacher status through an external course. As vacancies are rare at ERS we would encourage a visit to the school, or an introductory phone conversation. ERS is not a special school but all pupils have SEN and progress to GCSE and other public examinations, before progressing to college and 6th F

Main Purpose of Job

• To be an effective class teacher to the younger pupils in KS 1/2 across the ability range with various special educational needs.

• To contribute to the development of the school

Main Responsibilities & Duties

To be an effective teacher to pupils across the age and ability range 

• Lead by example – act as a positive role model to students and be an effective classroom teacher

• Plan and prepare effective lessons which meet the needs of all pupils.

• Ensure pupils’ work is marked regularly in accordance with the school’s Assessment & Reporting Policy.

• To use assessment to further improve pupils’ learning and to be able to report progress to the leader of the relevant Departments, the leadership team and to parents.

• Ensure high standards of behaviour through implementation of the school’s Behaviour Policy.

• Ensure that the classroom is a welcoming and stimulating environment in which to work.

• Ensure other relevant school policies and procedures are adhered to.

• Work with SEN team to ensure provision in EHCPs is met

• Liaise with Speech and Language Therapist Team and Occupational Therapy team to use strategies in class to support SEN

• Have knowledge of the SEN of the children in your class and employ strategies to support them


To contribute to the strategic development of the relevant Departments

• Contribute to the development of the relevant Department and cross-curricular relationships.

• To take on a share of the responsibility for developing schemes of learning and learning resources 

• To undertake to improve own performance through sharing best practice with colleagues from the relevant departments

• Play a full part in the successful running of events organised by the departments.

To be an effective tutor

• Be the “first port of call” for students with day-to-day pastoral issues.

• Support vulnerable pupils in the class

• Report to parents through the written reports, appointments and through parent meetings, annual review reports and attend annual review meetings

• Aid and advise on the transition from KS2 to KS3. 

• Use home school link book for regular contact with parents

Contacts & Relationships

The post holder will:

• Work closely with teachers and support staff, specialists, at every level in the school; pupils, parents/carers to provide information and advice, direct, guide, motivate, monitor, praise and sanction.

Egerton Rothesay School, located on the outskirts of Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire, is an all-through, co-educational school for children aged 8 to 19. There are 160 pupils enrolled in total. The school’s modern buildings are surrounded by spacious grounds, with dedicated areas for one-to-one teaching, the junior school and specialist support teams.

Egerton Rothesay caters for children with a range of needs, from dyslexia and dyspraxia as well as those with school anxiety.
