History and Values

Established in September 1972 through the merger of St Mary's Boys School and Ocklynge Girls School, Ocklynge Junior School caters to children aged 7 to 11 and is presently home to an enrolment of approximately 840 pupils. Operating as an integral part of the South Downs Learning Trust, the school has seen multiple expansions and improvements in its infrastructure over the years. From a sizeable multi-purpose hall with a stage to a dedicated theatre for creative arts like drama and dance, a music room, practical spaces for art and craft, and a refurbished library, the facilities cater to various needs. Furthermore, the school boasts a swimming pool, a floodlit multi-use games area, a fully equipped computer room, and a versatile 'pavilion' housing additional classrooms, spaces for extracurricular activities, individual music lessons, and sports changing facilities.

Mission and Objectives

At Ocklynge Junior School, the mission is to foster the holistic development of children, aiming for the following key objectives:

  • Realising each child's maximum potential.
  • Cultivating inquisitive minds and the ability to focus on tasks.
  • Developing self-reliance, confidence, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Celebrating every child's achievements and contributions.
  • Instilling values of respect for religious and moral beliefs, as well as tolerance for diversity in races, religions, and ways of life.
  • Teaching values of courtesy, good manners, and consideration for others.

School Organisation

The school operates with six mixed-ability classes in each year group, with 35 pupils in every class. These classes are meticulously assembled when children join in Year 3 from feeder infant schools. Each class is led by a teacher, supported by a trained assistant offering extra guidance to individuals or small groups. Additionally, each year group has a senior teacher functioning as Head of Year or phase, coordinating the activities of the entire year group.

Location

Situated in the picturesque Eastbourne, framed by the South Downs and breathtaking countryside, Ocklynge Junior School enjoys a beautiful setting. The location boasts excellent transport connections, with easy access to the M25/M23 motorway link and efficient train services making it reachable from London, Brighton, and Hastings within convenient travel times.
